Harmonic Balancer Bolt
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 68 327. My question is, is there supposed to be a harmonic balancer bolt in the crank, or is mine broke off in the crank. I tried looking at it and since it was painted over, I couldn't tell.
I was thinking there was one, but after talking to a guy at work, he suggested I look into it more because he thought there was a certain engine that didn't. |

With the constant heat up, cool down cycles that a crank goes through, and the vibrations that the ballancer is supposed to reduce, and the RPM's that an engine spins (even with a normal driver) I would not trust one without a bolt one bit. |

Some were a press fit, 327 would be about the right vintage for that. You could try running a tap though it and see if the might be there threads are really there. Not sure of the bolt size but Moroso's web site will have it listed

They are all pressed on, that's why you need a puller to remove, and an installer to install one.
I may well be wrong on all of them needing bolts, but i see no way for it to stay on, let alone stay in the same position. |

Ive only seen a few 327's that had bolts to retain the balancer. The vast majority of 327's weren't even drilled for the bolt from the factory much less tapped . I even had one early 350 that wasn't drilled for the bolt. Ive never seen a 283 that was drilled for the bolt. It was a learning curve in the early years of the small block. Remember the 265's didnt even have an oil filter .
