Original Brake Booster Color

What was the original color for the Bendix brake boosters on our trucks? I bought a used one that is black and it looks like the original color.

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

The booster can is gold CAD, The brackets behind it are Gold CAD but a little darker, The master cylinder & proportioning valve are both natural cast iron color. By the way, the master cylinder/booster parts in this picture were done with paint products. It is not actually raw cast or real CAD. It looks like a million bucks, and costs MUCH less than brand new correct stuff. Just dont spill brake fluid on it! CAD kit is from Eastwood. Cast color is Dupli-color "cast coat Iron". I have about 15-20 different rattle can colors and 7-8 of just silver/grey tha I've used on the whole truck. If anyone wants to know more just let me know & I'll post more details.

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

They're not cadmium plated, which is toxic or cad painted. More like zinc plating.
The gold is chromate. Which causes a chemical conversion on the surface of the zinc or cad to improve the corrosion resistance.
Most of the nuts/bolts you see are zinc w/ blue chromate.
They can also be colored.
The plating is the reason you wanna use antisieze on zinc plated bolts/screws goin in aluminum. There's chemical reaction between the 2 causes them to be hard to break apart and the white residue you see.

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

There were two suppliers of brake boosters on our year trucks. Bendix and Delco.

Bendix = black

Delco = gold (cad/zinc/chromate/whatever).

Unless its a concours show truck you're fine
The cad will give you better corrosion resistance than zinc.
Personally I like the iridescence in cad. Lil more red.

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

Not sure ... but the gold colored ones are the most popular in resto's. They are also a little harder to find for cores. Unsure if quality is actually any different though.

Not really a question of which one is better, but which one a truck is supposed to have. '67-'70 all used Bendix, '71-'72 with disc brakes used Delco. They are not interchangeable because the master cylinder push rod is a different length. The brackets that mound the booster to the firewall are different, too.

On a related topic, what are the visual differences between the Bendix and Delco boosters? About to buy one myself.

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

My Bendix booster has a little "Bendix" logo stamped onto it with a part number. I really like the look of the gold cad and I've contemplated the Eastwood kit. But the question is...was there any rhyme or reason to which trucks got a Bendix and which got a Delco? I'm enough of a stickler that if my truck originally had one or the other, I'd like to get the right one.

(Ok, someone is wondering why I want to put a booster on a non-booster truck if I'm a stickler. Answer: More power needs more brake.)

Re: Original Brake Booster Color

This is the new (aftermarket?) Bendix. It has Bendix stamped on the front of it.
Just for info: all 67-72 1/2T boosters I have seen have the same rod to master cylinder depth. They interchange from drum to disc trucks with no changes except type MC & prop valve.
