i deserve a trophy for most crap ever found inside a fender
i had noticed a little rust creeping through the front fender corner on the passenger side of my 72, i didnt really care since i was swapping to a 67 front clip with new fenders etc nor did i wonder why it was rusting there and not on the drivers side which was perfect. well ive started the swap this week and check out what i found inside that fender corner
the following was found.. 1 wrench 1 rag 1 screwdriver 1 battery terminal 1 nose to a tube of rtv sealant 1 razor blade 1 gasket of something 1 rubbet grommet fo somesorts assorted coins 5 lbs of dirt |

and no i dont think its possible for all of this to have just accumulated there, when i checked the drivers side there was nothing but maybe a rock or two and a pinch of dirt. its almost as if some previous owner saw the rust and though dumping 5lbs of cat litter or gravel down into the fender corner would absorb the moisture and keep it from rusting, boy was he wrong. the rest of the fender and clip on my 72 is pretty rust free as most CA trucks are. do you think the fender is trashed? it would need a new corner welded at the bottom but the rest of it has no rust

at least you have an actual pocket in existence on that fender to have bene able to accumulate all that, around here the pockets dont exist and all the crap has long since fell through, even all that would have, wrench and all, lots of rain and high humidity wet air+ dirt and mud and salt and snow and ice = major rot issues on all sheetmetal objects

randy's right, i've looked at probably 20 trucks in junkyards in my area and all of them have the cup on the right front fender totally rotted away, the only one that isn't gone is the one on Dad's 67, and it's bashed beyond repair.

Hey Blake, did you decide what you are going to do with the extra 67-68 clip? Let me know. I'd be interested, and local, no shipping

Just carefully remove the artifacts and preserve them. Ya never know, they could have come from some long lost ancient civilization from 30 yrs. ago, lol. I think the fender is fixable. I've welded up worse, that is, if the rest of its in good shape. I hate seeing original panels getting trashed just because of a few holes. They be getting rarer and rarer.

OK, I knew you were debating between a few options on the early sheetmetal. So the extra 68 fenders are pretty bad? Hows the hood?

the hood had a quarter sized hole cut into it for an antenna i guess. has a couple of small dimples in it otherwise straight and rust free. i just figured that the money spent to repair the hole and small dimples would be better spent just buying a new cowl hood. if i had a welder and the know how id just patch the hole and do the body work myself, it doesnt look bad but the shops i took it to are telling me it needs $200 of work, ya right... anyways the hood will be going on my truck until i order a cowl hood, so it could be a while till its for sale, but when it is youll see it on this parts forum. |

That is too cool! With all that weight gone, your gas mileage and acceleration will undoubtedly improve.
When I got my 69, it had been driven on farm roads for 20 years. Combine that with a few oil leaks and you get a quarter-inch of greasy dirt stuck to the bottom of the oil pan, trans, cab, bed, and frame. I spent a few hours each weekend for several weeks laying on my back with a putty knife scraping most of it off. Wish I would have weighed it all -- probably 50 pounds easy.

I think I saw about 14 spark plugs laying on the core support of my truck.(I think it was the core support, it was cold and my brain was froze) also in my glove box, I found a pack of 10 yr. old matches that still light. Hehe. Wait until I get my truck to my house, I'll top all of ya. I bet. lol
Brandon P.S. Longhorn, was the pot yours? or from the dope smokin old man? |
