14 bolt gov locker
Is there anyway to modify a gov locker in a 14bolt ff axle to operate like any other locker.
Thanks Mark

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
Umm, not that I know of. Get and open carrier and get a Detroit.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
Get a mini-spool...its less than half the cost of a Detroit. Not only that, a Detroit locks up so fast anyway it chirps on street corners. I'm a truck puller, and have heard of Detroits blowing up...but, never a spool.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
I havent heard of a lunch box locker that fits in a gov lock carrier. Then again, the detroit locker for a 14b looks a heck of a lot like any other lunch box locker since it replaces the spider gears on an open carrier.
Run the gov bomb until it blows and have an open carrier/detroit waiting to install.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
to answer your original question, you can weld it up so it acts like a locker
at my old job, had a fragged 14 bolt gov lock under a C30 dump truck. when it went, the carrier was so scarred i dont know if i would want to use it again. the dealership didnt reuse it when they re did the axle, but of course they dont make any $$$ by reusing the old. i would just echo to find an open carrier and use your insert of choice (detroit, lock right, mini spool).

Any leads on where to find those products? I've also got one of these that needs over-hauled. - THX

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
I think the problem is with a lunch boxs locker going into a 14b ff gov lock carrier is the that the gov lock has 3 spider gears as compared to a open carrier with 4 spider gears.
The clutch plates don't look bad but they don't last as long a regular locker. This is a rear axle for my bothers truck he's converting to a 3/4. The gears are 3.73. Will all the other 14bolt carriers cross to it or does he need a 3.73 carrier. If he does i guess he not out much he only paid $50 for the axle anyway. Another question is my truck 71 chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 has a factory locker (i think) in the rear. What type of locker is that. It chatters when i turn and it never lets just one wheel spin even it its up in the air. Both wheels spin when i have the rear off the ground, and i cant hold one and spin the other one. Thanks Mark

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
The 71's locker should be a No-Spin which is a Detroit Locker.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
Mark, I would normally agree except he said half ton. That means a 12 bolt and some sort of posi, not a true locker. I am not too familiar with posis, but I *think* those can be rebuilt with new clutch packs.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
My rear axle is a 12 bolt but i am sure that its a locker by how it acts, but i could be wrong. Both of my cars have posi rear axles and i can jack up one wheel and spin it by hand, but on pavement they will leave two black marks from the start. The pick up i cant spin the wheel it i jack it up in the air. the only way is to jack up both back wheels.

Re: 14 bolt gov locker
Gotcha, I was stuck in the 3/4 ton mindset.
