Harmonic Balancer question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Is it normal for a harmonic balancer to move a little left to right when you grab it and try to turn it left or right?
If not then since I have the truck apart this would be a good time to replace it.

Forgot to ask if I do need to replace the balancer (6 3/4 inch on the 350 now) what would be a good one to replace it with?

Be sure the keyway in the crank snout's not wallered out.

the 8" will be more effective yet cause troubles unless you change your timing pointer at same time.

is the crank turning? (timing chain worn)
is just the outter ring turning? (rubber seperated and ready to unleash catastrophic damage)

The crank is moving. The balancer is not.

Sounds like the timing chain needs to be replaced.

Definately not right. The balancer should not have any "Play" in it. I agree with the above. Bad keyway, balancer, or timing chain is loose. I would pull the balancer and check that first then go from there.

If the crank is moving you have more than balancer problems. Sound like main bearing problems to me.

This makes no sense to me. Are you sure you don't have it wrong and the balancer is moving but the crank is not?
With timing chain slop it is normal for the balancer which is mounted to the crankshaft to move a little left to right. Do you have the bolt in the center of the balancer out so you can see the crank, otherwise how do you know the balancer is moving on the crank? I think what you have is just normal wear on the timing chain. VV

I do have the bolt out of the center and it is the crank that is moving not the balancer.

well brad this is one of those things ,, like a snow ball rolling down a hill..

first it's just a paint job then a balancer then a timing chain and gears, then a cam and lifters, it's turn a blind eye.. or dig in..

don't you just love trucks

are you talking it moves up and down?= very bad things or rotate's back and forth..this is a loose timing chain..

HAHAHAH. And the funniest part is that I am not one bit upset about it. A part of me is saying well since you have to take off that balancer why not pop that timing cover off and have a lookie.

There are times that I dont listen to that part of me and for good reason hahah

I'm with you vettevet I don't know how skokie knows the crank is moving if the balancers not how are you moving the crank.
