Re: timming problem (HELP)
I' check the centrifugal advance weights and make sure the little mechanism is lubed. If they are sticking you will get that (what you describe).

Re: timming problem (HELP)
if your breaker plate isnt hanging up either through the vacuum advance arm binding , or the weights are swinging and causing the shaft to stayed advanced , the best way to check is take rotor off and verify the weights are completely closed, or removed distributor and hold the gear while twisting to verify that it returns smoothly, if thats all good, the only other thing it could be is timing chain/gears, either gobs of slack or jumping back and forth.

Re: timing problem (HELP)
My hunch is a loose timing chain or worn distributor gears.

Re: timing problem (HELP)
another few questions i have, what should the timing be at idle ?
also for setting up a 700r4 tranny i was told to hold the carb wide open and set the tv cable tight when wide open. |

Re: timing problem (HELP)
idle timing with vac advacned unhooked should be between 4-10 bftdc
and for the 700 yes that is good enough to drive straight to your local tranny shop and have them set it up using a pressure gauge. It most likely will last long at all if you do not let them set it up, just my .02...Randy
