Re: vortec heads

Speaking of which,I was just today talking with a builder,John Nijssen of Strokerengine.com and he says that the GM Vortec heads crack pretty easily and to get non-GM heads instead. He said if they get overheated once there're often finished.Anybody else hear about this?

Re: vortec heads

I have heard this also in a few places. BUT BUT BUT these heads a widely used in the circle track racing field with plenty of abuse (High RPM, Over heating issuses.) From what I have seen there does not seem to be a problem IMO. I have built engines useing them they do seem to run a little hotter 5 to 10 degrees at most but with no problems.

Re: vortec heads

They are very popular here in circle track "claimer" classes as well. Guys run the snot out of them and don't even think about it. They have lots invested in their engines and even though they are "claimers".

Re: vortec heads

A guy at work had to replace 1 Vortec head from cracking problems but it was on a super high mileage burban that he overheated several times. He pulled it apart because the head gaskets were trashed and found the cracks when he was cleaning everything up on reassembly.

Re: vortec heads

I got mine from Scoggin Dicky. Good to deal with and can answer questions. Don't use the cheap gaskets they send you. Get GM or Felpros.

Re: vortec heads

Chevy high performance has some good articles on the vortec heads.
http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...ift/index.html

One drawback is the centerbolt valve covers, the aftermarket has come up to speed on them. This also affects wire looms. And you will need the right intake, the bolts run straight up and down on the vortec, versus perpindicular to the head. Some have drilled out the intake bolt holes, but I wouldn't risk the possible manifold gasket leak.
