Your best bet will be to subscribe and post a WTB on the parts board.

Check your local parts store, autozone/advance, both of them have them usually. They are in there "chrome" parts section.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

There are 3 types of upper brackets for short water pump small blocks. The 67-68 type, the 69-71 type and the 72 type. I think the chrome one at the parts store is 67-68 type and the 69-71 is avaliable by some vendors. The 72 style was avaliable new awhile back but havent seen them avaliable lately. Hope this helps.

I’m not sure what I have then. What’s the difference? Length?

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

The 67-68 is real long as it mounts to the water pump. The 69-72 mount to the alternator bracket on the head. The 69-71 is shorter than the 72 bracket. If the bracket came off your truck it was probably the 69-71 short bracket since yours is a 71. If I remeber right the brackets were lengthened in 72 for the larger diamater redesigned alternator housing that looks like the 73 up alternators but is still external regulated. Hope this helps.

My brackets were all hosed up (see picture). I got a set from a guy in Texas and haven’t installed then yet, so I really don’t know if they are going to work. Here’s a picture of the old alt set up.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

That looks like a 69-71 upper bracket and modified for passenger side use instead of on the correct driver side. Not sure. Never seen one modified like that. Sorry not much help on this one.

Ok, that’s good. They really didn’t modify much, just jerry rig every thing up.

I'm looking at the catalogue for www.truckandcarshop.com otherwise known as "Truck Shop" and they show the upper straight arm piece for $8.00. "O.E." type is $14.(?)

Here's my 70 with the driver's side bracket. You can see the top in the pic. They do sell chrome ones at most parts stores that mimic ours.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

note the angle of the curve on rage'rat638's top 2 pics....that is the correct part, the aftermarket chrome ones i bought and tried had a milder curve and would bottom out on the cooling fan of the alt,so then i thought maybe i will run the tension bolt thru the backside of the alt mount but the bracket bottoms out on the body of the alt before the bolt will go in,yes i could change the belt to a shorter belt but would then be very close to covering the power steering pump.i gonna try to upload a couple of pics.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

This post is great. There needs to be a FAQ thread showing what accessory brackets are correct for the different years.

Note that the 67-68 alternator setup uses a boss on the front end of the left exhaust manifold, 69 and later doesn't.

What year did they switch to the pass. side alternator mount on the small blocks?

Start a thread and when we get all the info I'll be glad to move it to FAQ.

That is what came on my engine, and I always had trouble getting the belt tight enough to stop it from slipping. Now I have taller valve covers and the bracket was useless: alternator would hit the cover before i could get it loose enough to change the belt. Tried the chrome bracket and it would hit the fan on the alternator. I ended up cutting the stock bracket and welding in a piece of flat stock to make it longer. The belt still slips but that is probably due to the drag of the large blade flex fan that will be history soon.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

well... when i purchased the aftermarket chrome piece i noted it had 2 bolt holes for mounting it so i figured that one went on the lower bracket and the other went to the empty bolt hole located on the head...just made more sense to me for it to have 2 bolt holes.i took a few measure ments and made up some chrome spacers for the bolts and then i went to put it on and the angle was way to far up ward,i really wanted the 2 bolt holes so i wouldn't have to worry about the pivot point moving and....i wondered about the big wahooo bend on the peice i had,see i wanted the bracket to be straight because in my little mind i was thinking ok belt applies pressure to pulley ( if its tight) so i want to make the mount straight and durable, alt might be more stable with better support, because to me the stock bracket on a pivot point doesn't make alot of sense. anyway so the bolt holes didn't line up to well so i drilled them and i still didn't like the angle so i hacked the bracket shorter and removed one of the bolt holes ...then it bottomed out on the alt.

thing i s i can't beleive only certain models of trucks were afflicted with this bracket...has to be a fair amount of other gm products still on the road....someone has to have thought at some point maybe we can improve this, make it fuction better and make it look better .......with out costing 400 bucks
doesn't have to be laser cut polished aluminum

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

OK, here are some pictures I took of some brackets I am cleaning up to repaint.
The first pic shows a 67-68 bracket on the left and I believe a 69-71 on the right. The second pic is just the sickle-shaped part to compare the shape.

Re: sb drivers side alt bracket upper

I didn't like my alternator hanging that far out, so I used a Camaro mount for the passenger side. It's a lot closer to the engine and doesn't look as bad IMO.

My truck is far from "correct" though.
