Can someone tell me why some motors have the alternator mounted the right and some on the left. I know if there is AC on the motor then of course it most likely is on the other side. But I've seen motors ( 350's) without factory air have them on different sides. I just don't understand...............

Depends on the year/model. Most older Chevrolet's with the short water pump were on the drivers side, while the newer ones with the long water pump are on the passenger side. I'm sure that someone will chime in with a more specific answer.....

I think it had more to do with what year the body was made and how they ran the electric wiring. IE prior to internal regulators most of the alts are on the drivers side per the best of my brain power.

all 67 - 72 GM trucks, with a small block, had the alt on the dvr side. If it is mounted on the other side, then it is not as original. This includes all trucks with or without power steering, and/or A/C.

When GM switched to the internal regulator they also switched to the long water pump. 1973 chevy trucks started mounting alt on passenger side of engine. I'm talking about pre 72 chevy trucks had external regulators and short water pumps. 73 and newer chevy trucks had internal regulators and long water pumps.

I think they did this just to confuse the hell outa people. I'm trying to get the alt on the drivers side, compressor on the passenger side, then toss in long or short water pump brackets...a power steering pump, now I need the 2 grooved water pump pulleys and 3 grooved crank pulleys and everything has to be suited for either a short or long water pump. It's been a complete and total PIA in my opinion. One would think that this would be fairly easy.... as many combinations as the lottery

trucks and corevetts were the only ones to maintian the short pump after 69.

I think the 70 Impala had short pump. The 71 Impala went to a long pump.

I switched mine because I didn't like the way it was mounted on the driver side.
