Project: Death Trap 70 Stepside
This is going to be long but I guess I should start in the beginning. My father bought me a 72 SWB Super Cheyenne for my first truck when I was 15 (I wish I had it) , but later on lost his job and since my truck was the extra one, it got sold to pay bills. He has always felt bad about it and has made it up to me by buying me this truck off e-bay. I am now 30. Which was in Fort Wayne IN and I am in Texas. So after a few conversations with seller I flew to Fort Wayne and got in the truck to drive back. 4hrs. later I felt something like a possible flat pulled over, everything looked good so I got back in and took the next exit which was Effingburgh (SP), Illinois. Got out at a convenince store looked again and noticed some smoke from the front left tire so I jacked it up thinking it was brakes and the tire then fell off. The end of the spindle was gone and the drum brakes were the only thing holding it on. Thank God it did not come off at 70 mph on the interstate. So I called a tow truck and my brother in laws and waited in at a motel until they came to get me with the car hauler. This is how it got the name Death Trap. We made it back fine and in record time. I have some other projects but I finally got around to wroking on this one some this weekend. I put on the ECE front disc brake conversion, new upper and lower balljoints, tie rod ends and test fitted the new 24 inch Smoothies. Still saving up for tires. I had some more pics but the wife deleted them off the camera, will get some more as soon as I have some more progress.

Re: Project: Death Trap 70 Stepside
Will get some more pics when I get it out of the corner of the shop. Dustin believe me I wish I would of known you had the parts. Luther pm'd you. My brother in laws left Tx at 5 pm Sat and we pulled back in to my house at 12 pm Sunday. The longest stop they had was to load the truck less than 40 min. I drove all but a hour of the way home since I got to sleep in a bed Sat. night.

Re: Project: Death Trap 70 Stepside
That same thing happened to me. I had an old 70 chevy pickup and on the way home from work it started making a strange noise like squealing from the left front wheel. I nursed it home, about 10 miles and just as I pulled into my drive way the tire and wheel fell off. Turns ot the outer drum bearing had disintegrated and the drum was riding on the spindle until it decided to come off completely. I was lucky I had spare parts and the spindle wasn't damaged badly so I was able to reuse it. So much for not greasing the wheel bearings I put a lot of miles on that old truck and had a few other things go wrong too, so I know what a death trap is and I was lucky a few times myself. I am glad you weren't hurt and it all worked out to the good. It looks like you have a nice truck now.

Sweet looking 70. I also have a 70 short/step and want to paint it red, so yours is a great point of reference.

Re: Project: Death Trap 70 Stepside
Glad everything worked out for you. Glad you didn't loose your wheels either. And I'll go ahead and correct you on this quote, "so I got back in and took the next exit which was Effingburgh (SP), Illinois" That is Effingham, Illinois. I'm actually only about 60 to 90 minutes south of there. I hope that the people there showed you the good southern Illinois hospitality. If you every make it this way again and need some help just hollar. I'm not too far off of I-57 or I-64.

Re: Project: Death Trap 70 Stepside
Thanks for the correction and everyone was very nice, Also the next morning there was a little gathering of street rods in front of the restaurant by the motel, so that was cool.
