Re: Factory big block truck?

My 72 chassis has factory dual exhaust brackets welded the frame, are those indicators of a BB truck?

Re: Factory big block truck?

There was 402s and 396s in some of these trucks originally (only 2wds though),it should be listed on the glovebox label, might be on emblems too.I dont think they came with BBCs in 67 though

Re: Factory big block truck?

I think 69 was avaliable with a 396 and 70 was a 402. I might be wrong.
As far as 68 I am not sure if a 396 was an option.

One of them years was a transition from "396" emblems to "402" It was right around 1970 or so..

Re: Factory big block truck?

68 was the first year for the BBC, only a 396 was available. They changed to the 402 later. The glovebox sticker or build sheet is the only way to be sure what the truck had originally.

Re: Factory big block truck?

I believe 68 and 69 had the 396. 68 would not have fender badges for it. 69 had 396 fender emblems. 70-72 had the 8-400 emblems (402) I think 67 was small block only trucks. or sixes...

Re: Factory big block truck?

the 1964 chevy truck had the first big block it was a it was a tall deck and in 1966 was offered with a 396 long bed and high hump dose not matter if it was big block or small block can't understand why chevy had 2 humps me it would of been cheeper to just make one floor and make it easyer on us GM folks to want a 350 or 400 trans thats me

I can't really understand what you just typed, but do you mean the bigger C40 and up trucks? The tall deck big blocks never came in light trucks or cars, and 68 was the first year for big block (396) in pickups.

High humps didnt just come in big block trucks, iirc they also came in all 4x4's, and all 4speed trucks regardless of the motor.

This is all accurate info.But,I think`70s still had the 396 badge,even though it was a 402.396s stopped in`69,then 402.
The only factory dual exhaust came on big blocks. So,the factory brackets are a telltale.
High-hump/low-humps were related to trans options.Small with 3spd and TH350 in 2wd.High with 4spd,TH400 in 2wd.All 4wds are high-humps.All big block trucks had 4spds or TH400,so all big blocks had high-humps.Dig?

I've seen 1 or 2 big block trucks with the 3 on the tree. Don't remember what hump they had, though.

didn't the BB trucks also have the heat shield mounted to the lower firewall above the pass side exhaust --? Was that all years (68-72)or just the later?

I forgot that.I had a`68 396/3spd many years ago but couldn`t tell you about the hump for sure.I think it was low,but wouldn`t swear to it.

Re: Factory big block truck?

I have a factory 396, three on the tree, with the "Big" tranny hump, and yes the BB had the sheild on the firewall(Passenger side), SB did not. TELL-TALE sign if it's factory. What exact years these were on I am unsure of though!

Re: Factory big block truck?

thank you Dave... everyone tells me I'm full of sh!t when i tell them small blocks with a Th400 got a small hump
Big blocks with 4 speed or auto, got a high hump
all 4X4.. high hump
all 4 speeds.. high hump
I've seen many many small block Th400 trucks with a low hump.

one odd ball which i owned, was a 1/2 ton GMC with a 305 V-6?th400. (originally that's what it had anyways) this truck had a factory high hump floor. I have yet to see anyother 1/2 ton V-6/Th400 truck to compair it to.

Re: Factory big block truck?

Man,I thought I had it in a nutshell, damn!Right again,I also recall that I`ve had a C/30 with 350/TH400/small hump. But,I thought it had to do with the taller frame.
I think this is the first time I recall that we`ve truly ironed this out since I`ve been here.I love to learn this stuff.

Once again, where else are you going to learn such good info on these trucks? This site kicks it!!

So,can we put it in a nutshell,yet?
