Has anyone ever used the Highliner Headliner from LMC. The one with the speakers built into it? If so, what did you think of it.

I have been tempted to spring for one of them for a long time! They stopped offering them for a while, but I noticed they're back.
Someone said once that the speakers aren't all that great, but, I'd only use them for the CB anyhow. The music comes from the pipes!

its gotta be better than what i have now, just a couple of patched holes in the ceiling. what if you swap out the speakers with better quality ones? would it still be worth it?

I was going to go that route until I saw the price. I am in the process of developing my own along the same lines.

The pic above is from my sons truck that he recently sold. The speakers were cheap but didnt sound all that bad. We ran the wire's though the dome light and up under the head liner. We found this one on Criags list for $35. I dont think I would have paid what LMC wants for them

I really prefer a pair of 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speakers in the kick panels since I like the sound stage to come from the front. The console part of it does look nice though.

I've got a buddy with onw in his truck, he likes it. It beats no speakers.

I had one in my '84. I liked it but the speakers were cheap. I put better speakers in it & a CD player. The bass from the speakers made the cd's skip...

JC Whitney has sold these things since the 80s...at least. Dunno what they charge for them. Might be worth a look if you're curious.

They would prolly be OK if:

a: you spent the coin for a good set of speakers and had them properly tuned to the cab. having them aim right fo your ears segregates you from your passengers. it's nearly impossible to get the sound to an appropriate level, and still be able to talk to someone.

b: you covered/upholstered it in a good vinyl or cloth (or leather, if ya got it.) it kind of gives the sense of riding in a blazer with the fiberglass top on.

c: you used the overhead for a cb. it puts the controls and visibility of the radio a bit close to your face and makes it harder to see the controls, etc. you'd have to take your eyes a little too far off the road, because it gets out of your cone of vision, which is a little uncomfortable for some. if you were using a cb, it's not bad, because you typically set it and forget it, plus the speaker fires down, which is ideal.

I remember it being "echo-ey" and cheap plastic-ey sounding/feeling. it gives a sense of "hardness" to the cab that is uncomfortable.
my other beef with it is that it should integrate better lighting (granted, you could do this on your own) and provide a cleaner, more integrated means to get the wiring through.

I do think it would make a HUGE difference if it were upholstered with better speakers, to help cut down on the harshness.

I've got one in my '71 GMC. The speakers aren't all that bad, the radio isn't hard to see or too loud. I used some of that Dupli-color plastic spray paint to match the rest of the cab.
One of the main reasons I got it was I got tired of reaching half across the cab to change stations, that and the kids I bought the truck from hacked a big lop-sided hole in the dash for the newer radios. Some company really needs to make a patch panel for that area, finding a decent section at a junk yard is pretty much impossible.

I like the looks and functionality of it, but hate the price they're asking. Also, for an "audio purist" (which I'm not) the center two speakers would have to go. You wouldn't want the two separate signals arriving at your right (or left) ear at two different times. Finally, I'm not sure I'd want the speaker(s)
that close to my ear, so I'm going with 6X9's in the doors.

I got one last year and it beats no music or am only like my truck had.....I didn't want to cut my dash trying to keep the truck somewhat original......so this was a great addtion to get tunes.....speakers aren't the best but that is an easy fix.....price is steep but looks good without cutting the dash...
