Sandblasted frame
Hi all
I had the sandblaster over today and he blasted my frame, rad shell, inner fenders, front bumper and windshield cowl extensions. I am very happy with the way they turned out. The problem is I feel I was charged to much. When I talked to him by phone last week he said it would be around three hundred to do the frame and suspension and rear end. When he arrived at my place about 13 miles from his shop he had 10 bags of sand. after blsating a couple of hours He was almost out of sand, I then had to go get 10 more bags, now granted I had him do these other part while he was there. The 10 bags that I went and got came to $62.70 with tax. I know that the 10 bags he brought came from the same place, he was at my place blasting for 4 hrs when he was done he charged me $450 that plus the $62.70 I spent is $ 512.70 plus my gas and 26 miles. Was I over charged? |

Re: Sandblasted frame
That sounds about right. I had my bedsides and a few smaller things done, and it was around $300. Frames take awhile to get all the 40 year odd years of crap off..

Just to give you an idea. Couldn't of you just rented a blasting pot, and compressor ?? Still would need the sand, though. Once, when I was a kid..we rented a pot, and compressore...blasted a 64 Impala frame and under body...took us for ever. We ended up recycling the sand (shifting it thru like a screen or something) and reuseing it. John

Re: Sandblasted frame
i belive hes talking canadian money. so thats like $440 american. still a little high, but he probably brought his own compressor. i have a guy near me that blasts for a living at his house. so i can slip my stuff in between his normal work and could get what you got done for about $175-$200. id like to meet the guy blasting and powdercoating a frame for $350. ive priced 3 different places around here and couldnt find a price under $850 for the frame and front suspension. the other 2 quotes were near a grand.

I would not mention a price on here that was bull ?!?! So far I've had a 64 Impala frame, a 72 C-10, and soon a 69 Vette frame will be there...as a matter of fact today. The 64 and 72 frames cost me $350 and $300 respectively (this is for black...colors are more) The guy does alot of industrial/commercial/automated industry parts.....so if he is doing a big batch of a particular color (that I need), then he give me a better deal, and throw my parts in. By the way, I didn't know this, but they have metallics, flouresents etc. in powder. John

Re: Sandblasted frame
$350 is really on the cheap side, John. That's a steal of a deal. I want to say the last one I had blasted and coated was $600, on a buddy deal. Don't let him know how cheap it really is!

Re: Sandblasted frame
OK I lied...i took the 69 Stingray frame down there today.....The prices went up slightly
It's now a whopping $475 to blast and coat. We were planning to go with black...I talk him into Silver (which will give it some contrast..make it look like we gave a crap)...then he showed me this other color... It's way cool...it's like a silver/black hammerite type of thing. $475 for the frame...it'll be done in a week. John

Re: Sandblasted frame
Thanks for the input guys I just wasn't sure. But as I said I am happy with the way it turned out. I primed it today with black epoxy primer it looks real good, tommorrow I will try to get it painted although the primer makes it look like its already painted. I hope these photos show up. Thanks

Re: Sandblasted frame
Thanks guys. Hey i forgot all about POR15, I was going to use Temclad Rust paint. But POR15 is probably the best choice with the epoxy primer it should stay rust free for many years.

Re: Sandblasted frame
try calling your local high school and see if they have a auto shop class. see if they would be interested in doing it for practice.i did and all it cost me was the paint and primer and a little for the blasting material. plus the got some practice. just my 2 cents
