My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

Well, I've burned through $75 worth of 94 octane in the last couple days... I bought a really nice '72 Chevy Custom Deluxe out of Oklahoma from a guy who posted it here but who is also a regular on one of my Oldsmobile forums with a reputation for selling nice stuff. It arrived in Ohio last week and I finally picked it up yesterday. It's a rock solid TX/OK truck - sold new by Hudiburg Chevrolet in Fort Worth - and was a blast to drive the 147 miles back to PA. I put another 2 hours of drive time on it today and have been tinkering with it. It has a NOM 327 of yet-unknown origin and my buddy dug out an old 327/350 open element air cleaner for it. I also tried to put on a set of Corvette rallies with RWLs to see what it would look like, but the bolt pattern is smaller than the truck's. Here are a few pics below.

Per the build sticker, it's a Highlander Group C package that included a ton of the options shown as an incentive to buy the late '72s instead of waiting for the redesigned 1973s. Also as a Highlander, it should have green plaid inserts in the seats where the green cloth is now. If I can find them, I may put it back to correct someday. I also guess per the build sticker that it was originally solid green olive with no white paint?

Before with a mystery air cleaner....

After!

DOH! Won't fit!

Terry

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

Nice score.I had a solid paint Highlander I bought in`73.It`s unusual to find a solid Highlander or Cheyenne Super since the two-tone was included in the package.I can`t remember the company that sells the original fabric ($89/yd),but I have the info I can get you if no one else chimes in.I got a blue sample for my truck but that`s as far as I`ve gotten.

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

Thanks guys. I've wanted one of these trucks for years and am having a ball with it so far. Special-K, based on the build sticker showing just Dark Olive, was it definitely a solid green truck, or is that not necessarily a sure thing if the two-tone was included in the package? Just trying to do automotive archeology as much as possble....

I can't quite remember... doesn't the 5 in 506 indicate 2 tone?
The highlander really only added the seat treatment... all the other options were seperate.

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

The Highlander added the Cheyenne-only Woodgrain lower moulding, too.I don`t know my paint codes, but I`ve never seen the accent color not listed.White was "almost" the only accent color, but not quite. The only exception would be with Dark Olive could have Medium Olive and visa-versa.Also with Medium Olive and Grapefruit. So,I guess there`s three Dark Olive paint codes.Unless the code varies between main color/accent,too.Then there`d be five codes.I`m thinking, not.

Here is an earlier 2004 thread that shows all the Group A-C Options. I guess the Highlander plaid was a basic part of group A:

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

I actually saw a 71/72 1/2 ton long fleet that was red with yellow insert in the middle and cab roof. It was listed on the SPID too.
I'm pretty sure the 5 ment 2 tone...there was another number that indicated the other style of 2 tone too IIRC.

Thanks for the compliments. If that 5 in the paint code means two-tone, that wil make my day since I like things to be fairly original. (I was willing to forgive the NOM 327 in this case... ) Anyway, I'm having as much fun with this truck as with any of my other toys, but you guy know all about that already!

They are a pleasure to drive and get all the looks a fine car gets.
The info on two-tone color options I gave is from the ordering book.It seems there were exceptions like in many other cases.

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

I did some forensics on the truck yesterday and per the block casting numbers, it actually has a 1967 283 in it (3896948) with 195 hp. It also appears to have an "IDE" engine suffix code stamp which I cannot find a reference to anywhere.

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

The engine suffix IDE is probably only DE. I've seen many times the stamping has an "I" when it should be a 1 which corresponds with the day it was built. With that casting #, I have DE as being a 67 Chevelle 283 w/ Powerglide. I don't see any DE in 66 and that casting # only being used in 66-67. As far as the outside color, the SPID only says green and all the two tones I've seen have always stated so on the SPID like: white/medium olive/white for the roof and side colors. Or white/medium olive if the roof was white but the sides were solid green. My best guess, hope it helps.

Re: My New '72 Custom Deluxe Highlander

I'd agree with the DE suffix code. It's definitely an 'I' vs. a '1' though.

Thanks for additional confirmation on the single color. That annoys me a little, but it looks good so it will be two-tone for the forseeable future. I have no problem with an all-green truck, so I'll be happy with it in either color configuration if I get it repainted eventually.

Did I read somewhere that it should *not* have the woodgrain molding on the tailgate, being a Highlander?
