Wrong freaklin starter Solenoid!

My 71 wiring on the Solenoid has R & S. Yellow & Purple wires in the harness. However the Solenoid installed on my starter only has one terminal. Will I have to get the older Solenoid with the two terminals or can I hook both of the wires on the one terminal???? Anyone know? Sure hate to remove that starter again. Whats my options?

Re: Wrong freaklin starter Solenoid!

You're best bet is to convert to HEI, then you won't need the other terminal. The points dizzy that came stock uses ~9v (supply wire is a resistor wire)while running, for starting purposes the yellow wire supplies 12v to the coil for a hotter spark. HEI uses 12v all the time so you don't need the extra terminal. Basically the news is that you need the 2 terminal solenoid if you have the points dizzy.

Re: Wrong freaklin starter Solenoid!

I have the HEI installed except the wiring which is what I was doing wiring the starter POS lead. So I can forget the yellow wire & run a unfused to the HEI?

Yeah, if you have HEI you can eliminate the yellow wire altogether. I ran a 12ga. wire from the ign unfused terminal in my fusebox to the distributor and that's it, although most folks will recommend putting an inline fuse in it somewhere.
