How much is your registration?

Did you know that even though I don't have to pass smog I have to pay a $300.00 annual registration and 158.00 of that is a "weight fee". Thats' frigen ridiculus. Oh well, I guess since the national average for gas is $2.90 a gallon and we pay $3.59 there's other things I can wine about. AHH..good old San Bernardino,California. The nation's finest.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

Geno,
I hate to hear that it costs so much to keep your truck legal. You guys should check out Oklahoma, I pay around $20 a year for a tag and we have no vehicle inspections.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

Take your truck to a moving company and ahve it weighed again. But this time REMOVE everything-spare, toolbox, big rear bumper, saddle tanks not being used. Anything that can be unbolted and replaced easy enough, do it and you may find that the registration will go down. I live in Cherry Valley, Ca. Just down the road (10 fwy) from you. I have even removed the bed, put smaller 'loaner' tires and wheels on just to get the weight fee down. Good Luck!

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

I think mine was around $75.00 too - still too high, but much better than $300. They can't put a county or city tax on the registration, can they?

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

Don't other states offer permant regstration on vehicles over 20 years or so?? Two years ago I paid $149 for my permant plates here in Montana. They're good for as long as I own the vehicle now.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

I paid $65 (roughly) for a permanent collector vehicle plate in Washington. Never need inspection or tabs again. When I lived in California, though, my experience was the same as above. Agreed on the sucks part.

It has to be the county your in charging all those extra fees or something. Here is a breakdown of what I pay for my 69 3/4 ton in Merced County

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

Did you guys just buy your truck recently? Mine is $65.00 and has been for the last 9 years I owned the truck. Unless there charging by California Zip code which does not make any sense. I"d call DMV as ask about that one.

Both mine are $138 and ones a half ton and the other is 3/4 ton

I'd sure love to get it down to $75

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

Mine was $80 bucks this year on the Chevy. The Longhorn GMC is NONOP. Starting in 2009 all my fees will go up because I will be Military retired. Tennessee is $25 a year. I wish Cali was like that.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

I paid $129 this year. That's down from $180 a few years ago. I paid about $60 in 1990, but when I had the title transfered from my father to me it more than doubled that even though it was a "gift".

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

byrd,

Doesn't Kentucky still have the personal property tax? I think that makes up the difference between other states and the .63 you pay.
In OH, I paid $65 for my '99 Dodge Dakota. Not sure about my '68 Chevy...currently out to pasture at my farm.

From what I remember, when you receive a car as a gift, the registeration is different some how. Longhorn, if you have a NONOP on your truck, when you do decided to register, you have to play catch up from when it was NONOP to the current date. I bought a car here in Los Angeles that had a NONOP for almost a year, and I had to pay the back and current registration.

if you would have told the dmv you wanted to keep it on non op they wouldnt have charged you for that year. they would have only charged the transfer fee. but they are not going to offer up that info, you need to know it. Then if they ask how you got it home you need to tell them you trailered (not towed) it from driveway to drivway so it never touched the road at all. Ideally to pay the least amount on a non op vehicle that is close to the end of a full year is to keep it non oped and then pay the new registration when its due. in other words non op really only works if you keep it non oped for a whole year because anytime you want to get it on the road again they make you pay for the entire current year it is in, but they will not make you catch up previous years of non op.
non op can save you money but you need to know the ins and outs of how the system works.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!

CA...lived there for 35 years...nice place fro me to grow up on the beach (Santa Barbara)...but the state has laws on top of laws and then more laws. Beautiful place, but I would never want to live there again.
