My welding supervisor office mate isn't impressed.

The inappropriate use of the cut off tool for grinding was not cool for a demo, and the welding wasn't the best.

Instead of all that grinding and filler rod.....with a panel as easy to access as that, why not hammer weld it with a torch, no filler rod or TIG needed.....

The reason is because probably 90% of the restores out there use a mig welder.
The process shows you HOW to get that smooth seem regardless of what method you use. No matter what welding method you use you NEED to remove the proud weld bead before you planish it.
Pretty much all metal shapers Ive meet and talked too use a TIG because it creates less warpage.

I agree with ya, except hammer welding WITHOUT filler rod doesn't produce a bead, as it's hammered down during the welding process.............

And I too use a cutoff wheel for grinding.....works very well in certain circumstances.....wear proper protection.

Nothing wrong with the repair in the video......

Here's the funny thing, I go thru about 100-200 4" cut off wheels a year and very rairly use one to cut something off

They are the only thing I have found that get into 90* corners and are controlable.

cutoff wheels also produce less heat while grinding than grinding disks.

The fella in the vid went to a lot of work to share his technique with others. I like the repairs that require no bondo or skim coats, and all with common tools. I also use my cutoff tool for almost everything EXCEPT cuttin' stuff off.
Thanks for posting it. It wasn't as much fun as watching Jesse James make a gas tank with a BFR and his planishing wheel, but I have the tools for this

me being a metal worker i always enjoy seeing new techniecs

but also i could get the same effect by just using a metal buffing pad on a grinder, i know, ive seen me do it

but even with that said i commend the guy for going through the trouble to show others howits done

Maybe we should change the name to 4" grinding wheels, since everyone does it. My son gave me a wheel for my grinder, it has a bunch of stacked emery paper. Cleans up welds real nice and doesn't wear out...just a thought J.

yup the flap wheels are my tool of choice for finishing welds.they polish things up very nicely while not being over aggressive.

Using the edge of a cutoff wheel instead of the face of a grinding wheel makes a lot less heat & allows you to work the high spots with great control. But you must have great control to do it. Not everyone can get a feel for it. Just like porting cylinder heads. Either you pick up on the technique that works for you and learn rapidly how to hone your skills, or you don't learn and remain a butcher
