2004R info
I'm looking to get an OD auto tranny put in my 68 C10 but I don't know much about them. I've seen a thread or 2 that talk about the 2004R being pretty much the same size as the T350's and what you need to do to install it. What vehicles did the 2004R originally come in so I know what to look for at a yard? My main question though is what is the difference between the 2004R & the 700R4 and which one is really the preferred tranny?

Re: 2004R info
Im not sure what the differences are but what i do know is that I have a 700r4 on my 350 in my 67 and that it is about the same size as a t350. The install was not complicated, but make sure you wire up the converter. Also you should try and find an 86 and after, they came in camaros, blazers, 1/2 ton trucks etc... Depending on how much you are looking to spend you can get a new one from tci for 1300... I just bought one rebuilt for 600 but the gut is near dallas. My truck hasgood launch and does 80 on the highway at 3000 rpm it is a great transmisiion.

Re: 2004R info
2004r are good trannies if you can get them built right that also have a better ratio than the 700 that has a 3.08 i think first and the 1.75 second. the 200 has a 2.75 with a 1.67 think second.

Re: 2004R info
700R4 is similar in length to a TH350 with a 9" tail shaft. 200R4 is similar to a TH350 with a 6" tail shaft.....the latter being more common.
Both can be built to handle stout motors and the 200 1st to 2nd gears are closer than the 700. You will drop more RPM's when a 700 shifts from 1st to 2nd than a 200 will. 200's where in alot of midsize cars such as Monte Carlos, Regals, Grand Nationals....small V8 cars. Be carefull cuz some only have the BOP (Buick,Olds,Pontiac) bolt pattern. your gonna find that 700's and guys that do performance builds on 700's are more plentiful just because they are more common. Look up Bowtie Overdrives on the web....lots of good info on both tranny's.

Re: 2004R info
Quote:
- Gear Ratios: Code:
TH200-4R TH700-R4 1: 2.74 3.06 2: 1.57 1.62 3: 1.00 1.00 4: 0.67 0.70 R: 2.06 2.29 - The mount on the TH200-4R is ~6 1/2" further back than the short tail TH350. - Your TH350 yoke SHOULD be the same, make sure to check before you throw the tranny in. If you can, it wouldn't hurt to grab the yoke from the doner car. Here's what I need for my 64 Impala when I swapped in the TH200-4R (I've added/changed/deleted some steps that apply to your truck): - move tranny mount back (redrill holes, TH350 tranny mount should bolt up to the 200) - stock dipstick tube fit just fine for me (got mine out of a full size olds) - bracket for TV cable, this bolts on back of the carb, if you have a 4 bbl shouldn't have a problem since you can get it off the doner car. If you have an older carb you're going to have to change the throttle brackets to allow the TV cable to hook up. You might get lucky and be able to drill a hole for the nipple that the TV bracket snaps onto. If you have a 2bbl you're going to have to make your own bracket (like i had to do, go go 2bbl!). WARNING: It is imperative that the TV cable be set properly! Failure to do so will result in transmission damage. I took mine to the guy that built my tranny and got him to set it. He didn't charge me anything. - brake switch, this is so when you hit the brakes doing highway speeds it will unlock your TC. Don't be lame and put a toggle switch in to control the TC! I got mine out of an 84 Monte carlo, it was the same thread as the brake switch in my 64 Impala so it should be the same in your truck. When you go looking for one, get the one with 4 wires. 2 wires for brake lights and 2 wires for TC. The 2 wires for TC will have power going to it all the times, when you hit the brakes it interrupts the flow and unlocks the TC. - vacuum switch, this is the other part in the TC lock/unlock system. It should have 2 or 3 wires. 1 wire goes to your brake switch (usually blue), the other down to the tranny (usually green). On my setup there was a third wire which was a duplicate of the green wire (spliced at the connector), it's suppose to be for an ADLD connection port inside the car, don't worry about it you don't need it. On the other end you run a vacuum line to your intake. You need one of those vacuum things that only supplies vacuum when the engine gets up to a certain temp (i believe mine is 180F which is WHITE in colour). This basically makes sure the TC won't lock when it's cold (which may or may not stall your car). I also got both of these items out of the same 84 Monte Carlo. - Gear linkage, you may or may not have to change/modify this. Again, it wouldn't hurt if you took the linkage from the doner just incase. - Gear indicator on column. Honestly i still have the [P R N D L] on my column. I haven't bother to make one up or change the detents yet, so this will be left up to you to do. If you need any more technical information (such as wiring, etc.) PM or something. |

Re: 2004R info
Most transmission builders I've talked to say the 2004R is a better tranny than the 700R4 when built right. I know all 2004R's have a universal bellhousing bolt pattern as Morgsie mentioned.
Check out these guys.

Re: 2004R info
The previous mid-size rear wheel drive gm cars often had the 200 transmission.
Such as up to 1987 monte carlo, buick regal, pontiac grand prix and oldsmobile cutlass. You can bank on a 200 tranny if these models had a v-8 from the factory, I'm not sure about the V-6 cars.

Re: 2004R info
Grand National had them and they were a V6 car. The V6 Caddy's came with them aswell.
