Windshield trim removal?

Another question/sanity check before I go out and do something stupid with a big screwdriver...
Is there a proper method to remove the windshield trim (chrome or stainless or whatever on my 1970)?
I've got a couple of leaks (windshield and the antenna entrance) and was hoping i could remove the trim and attempt to seal the windshield then replace the trim.
Am I overly optimistic and I really need to remove it all and replace with a new gasket and trim?

Thanks
