Thickness of brake shoe material

How thick should the pad be on a brake shoe on a 69 GMC 1/2 ton?

I am pulling the drums for inspection. The brakes were working fine but I want to know that they are fine before I put it on the road.

How thick are new shoes and how thin should they go before replacing?

The minimum thickness is 1/32" above the rivets. Also any cracks, glaze or fluid contamination warrants replacement. Personally,I like a little more meat on the shoes and replace them sooner than these specs would dictate.- Brian

Re: Thickness of brake shoe material

Minimum thickness requirements vary from state to state for inspection purposes. Here in MD, It is 2/32from the web on bonded shoes, and 2/32 above the rivets on riveted shoes. New shoe thickness on the trucks is somewhere around 6/32.

Re: Thickness of brake shoe material

I stand corrected. Info was from the infamous "Haynes" manual.

Re: Thickness of brake shoe material

Thanks everyone.

I justed measured and I have about 5/32 of brake lining so I think I will just repack the wheel bearing, new wheel seals, clean everything up and readjust.
