Looked in FAQ and tried several searches - no luck

I have a 72, I-6, 3 on the tree - the lowest part on the column, where the shift handle is mounted is loose - I can push it towards the front about 3/4" and pull it back about 1/2" - the shift arm is nice and tight in the bucket but the bucket is loose.
Can anyone tell me if that's the way it is or how to tighten it up? Thanks all.

would like to help , just cant visualize what your talking about. my shift handel mounts to what i would call the highest part of the colum (by the steering wheel). what part is it your calling a bucket?

Luvlegs,

I'm currently rebuilding one for my dad's truck.
The lower "shifting housing", simply slides down the column and over the inner shift tube inside the column. It meshes into a kind of keyed slot. In other words the inner shift tube has the male end of the key and the shifting housing or bucket has the female end. It is not bolted in place at all. The next piece of the column holds it there.
After the shifting housing bottoms out on the inner shift tube the next piece of the steering column which has the holes for the signal light and the hazard button is slid down into place. This piece slides down on the column and is turned clockwise to lock into place. Then the rest of the innards of the column are installed and tightened.
Maybe on your column the second housing is not locked in place causing the shifter housing to be loose on the inner shift tube?

yeah, I know, it's hard to visualize unless you're taking one apart, or putting one together.
I have an old one for parts and I'll see if I can get some better descriptive pictures for you tomorrow.
Basically the bucket you're talking about can't be tightened. The next bucket with the signal light lever and hazard button has to kind of "lock" it in place by turning the whole bucket, (top one), clockwise on the steering column.
