I have heard that if the dash between the dash pad and windshield is painted gloss, will reflect a glare into the windshield. Is this true? And if so, any sugestions??

I hear this too, so I painted mine flat black but it was really hard to keep looking nice (always dusty) and it wore easy. I went back to a satin black - looks much better and is easy to clean. Haven't had any problems with reflection but that's probably because it's black - may be a problem with other colors.

If you are going with a base coat/clear coat, you could just not shoot the clear on the top of the dash.
I don't know how they did it back in the day, but it does seem they are all painted with flat paint.

thanks for the replies, I already shot the interior, so I guess I will sand the dash with some 1200 grit to flatten it.

just pick the color you want to use and have your auto paint store mix it in a "vinyl" color.It can be the same color of your vehicle even if that's what you want.You can get the vinyl mixes in a variety of sheens low gloss -med gloss-high gloss or any in between.Most vinyls are ready to spray once mixed at the shop and have indefinite shelf life"supposedly". On my trucks I usually paint the top of dash to match the pad-it's the same paint holds up great against sun fade too.

I did mine with a $4 can of spray-on bed liner material. It's made by Dupli-Color and can be had at your local Wally-World (aka Wal-Mart). It's got a modest sheen so you don't get reflections, but it doesn't look 'dull' like flat or satin can because it's got a slight texture to it. I'll post a pic or two when I get a chance.

Mine used to be base coat/clear coat white and there was a bad reflection on the winshield. I guess it didn't bother me too much because now it's painted turquoise base coat/clear coat

My painter did mine as Longhornmail suggested, and painted the topside of the dash in just base coat. Same color as my truck, and no glare. Just thought ya might wanna know? Here's a pic of the front of the dash.
