have someone move it around for you while you look at the mechanisim and see if you can see it binding anywhere..

Does it do it all the time, or just when its running??

Re: 68 gmc auto shifter trouble...

all the time and is only getting worse...
ya i already had the boy shift it and i looked at the shift linkage on the fire wall side. theres like a ball that runs in a divet plate for each gear. theres a major lump on the plate that the ball goes over into park. i greesed it and it did not help. once you get it to shift into park or drive and you hold the sifter towards you it shifts easy cause the ball or ball area on the linkage is retracted from the plate. it has to do with somthing that makes that ball lift away from the divited plate. i just don't no what. i was hoping there was an adjustment some were.. dont really want to rip outh the colomn..

When you move the shifter you have to pull(or "lift") the lever towards you to clear the stops. It prevents accidentally shifting from drive to reverse, reverse to park, drive to L2, etc. Are you doing that or just trying to push the shifter without lifting it?

I have the same problem about every 5 years or so. I just have o lubricate the mechanism and it works fine. But i didn't know about the lift thing when I was a teenager. My dad was with me once and saw how hard it was to shift and told me to pull on the selector..I never knew until then...
