Just got new leaf springs which came with stock rubber bushings. I picked up some polyurethane ones to replace them and went about replacing them.

The rubber was a b*tch to get out, but I managed to do it. But there is an outer metal sleeve that was on the outside of the bushing and it appears to be spot welded in places to the leaf spring eye!

What would you all try to get it out? I've tryed banging it hard with a metal chisel with no luck. I don't my torch system with me either. I have 5 more rounds after this one and i don't want to spend all weekend fiddling with it.

quick question ... what was wrong with the new rubber ones?

nothing, but I've had the new poly ones for ever and I wanted to put them to good use. At this rate, I may just replace this one then leave the rest.
Do you think the rubber ones are just as good as poly?

You might try getting a deep socket of the exact size as the metal sleeve, and using a press to push it out???

cut reliefs with a sawsall in the sleeve , then keep chisiling . they will pop right out . as for the rest of the bushings , along with a the torch trick , get your self a few ( because you will break some off ) 1/8 and 3/16 drill bits and drill as much of the rubber as you can , thru both sides .

I built a press for stuff like that from angle irons and a bottle jack..

oh my... that is a terrible job to do! I would stick with the rubber if they are new! I replaced all of mine (10 total) and it took many many hours. Here was my way to do it...

1. take a torch to the rubber on both sides, let it burn until you can knock it out or it drips out (5-10min).
2. From the inside of the eye or the small opening for the eye use a sawzall to break the outer wall of the sleeve. Once it's broken then you are set.
3. Take an air chisel to the lip (like you have done) and push it out through the bottom.

Good luck, that's one job that I never want to do again, messy too! If you really want to change then I suggest taking the springs to a spring shop and paying them. I'm cheap to so you know if i'm saying it then it must be true! Good luck

Just wanted to say thanks, the sawzall relief cut made all the difference. That and then the air chisel and they popped right out.

Yeah, I got the rest out that way then started putting the springs in, only to realize they gave me the wrong front springs. I think they are actually labeled wrong. they say they are 22" but they are really 24" so back to the spring shop they go... I hate when this happens, totally held me up this weekend.

I had to call energy suspension a few times and get new bushings sent out. They claim that they had my kit for 20 years with no issues but I proved them wrong!! Don't ya hate it when the parts hold you up....

I remember how much of a pain those were to get out of my 69's rear springs. Glad you got them out.
