Check Engine light

Can antone help me. I have a 1983 Chevy custom Deluxe with a 305 engine in it 2wd. My check engine light keeps turning on and off. I checked the fluids they look good, It doesn't look like it's overheatting. Anything else I should look at. The only thing wrong with the truck is that after turning the engine off it sputters for a bit before shutting off. Any suggestions?

Re: Check Engine light

The check engine light is tied to the choke.

Re: Check Engine light

I have an 83 with the 305 also, these are the trouble codes for the ENGINE LIGHT on our trucks.

#12-No distributor reference pulses to the ECM. normal code with ignition on and engine not running.

#13-Oxygen Sensor Circuit

#14-Shorted Coolant Sensor Circuit

#15-Open Coolant Sensor Circuit

#21-Throttle Position Sensor Circuit

#23-Open or grounded M/C Solenoid Circuit, E4ME Qjet

#34-Vacuum Sensor Circuit

#41-No distributor reference pulses at specified engine vacuum

#42-Electronic Spark Timing (EST)

#44-Lean exhaust indication

#45-Rich exhaust condition

#51-Faulty or improperly installed calibration unit(PROM)

#54-Shorted M/C Solenoid Circuit and/or faulty ECM

#55-Grounded V ref(term21), hush voltage on Oxygen Sensor circuit ECM

All of these trouble codes are stored in the Memory except #12 which will flash while the fault is present.
You might want to have the PROM read and see what trouble code is at fault and causing the light to flash, or try erasing the memory and see if the light still comes on.
to erase the memory remove the ECM fuse in the upper right corner of the fuse panel for 10 seconds.
Good luck
