I just got a crazy idea!!!

I am building a '69 Chevy Short-Step. I am REALLY cramped on space. 1 car garage and no outside storage for parts. The truck has its questionable spots. All repairable.

1) My wifes favorite idea. Sell the truck.

2) Fix what I can to get it drivable. $$$ Not gonna be happy, it's still not what I want.

3) Part out the truck and buy replacement parts as necessary. Thats the crazy idea. This way I won't have any excess parts laying around. I'll be able to buy the custom parts and install them within my cramped space. This might keep the wife happy.

Keep it, donīt let her have her way just because she donīt like it.
Tell her to sell her knick knacks because you donīt like them and see what she thinks about that.

Re: I just got a crazy idea!!!

Sit down with a piece of paper and list everything that needs replaced or redone. Then decide if it's better to dump it and pickup something that is more do-able. Try and keep emotion out of it. Look at it as money pit that you don't want to fall into. Sometimes the $7k trucks look out of reach but normally a redone truck(if redone well) is a better choice than a bargin $1k or $2k truck. Mine is a tri-5 model , I was wanting something from the late 70's

My thought is, if your both not on board about this then get rid of it and find one you both would share some enthusiasm in. I’ve been lucky, my wife supports my craziness and lets me enjoy my two hobbies (rods and guns) and I do the same for her. I think partly because I don’t over spend on my toys, I always budget my self accordingly. The house needs and kids come first.

Jeff foxworthyIf she ain't happy... you ain't happy.
And if she ain't happy long enough, you'll be unhappy with only 1/2 of your stuff.
Make a deal with her. Tell her you'll ocupy the garage for 'X' number or months. Sweeten the pot, tell her at some fancy restaraunt.... the kinda place they remember the rest of there life.
I recomend taco bell... yeah, she'll remember that!
It'll be a give and take, so you can expect to be sitting in the opera, or even worse, she'll make you go dance with her, or hang out with her at the mall.
Once you've sold your soul... get the truck in there, and blast the sucker apart. We aren't talkin a full frame off headach here, just what you need to do to get the frame cleaned up and paainted/por'd, and rebuild the brakes/suspention. Slamp it back together, and any new/better used parts you come across between now and then can get slapped on in this step.
Now you have a running and driving truck. You can pull it outta the garage, and park it, or drive it.
Having everything you think you'll need on hand will speed up this step. And don't forget to have fundage for all the crap that'll break.
When you need the garage for a week 6 months from now.. remind her how you got done before your deadline, and take her back to taco bell... or you can really butter her up, and take her to burger king or something like that.

It's give and take. You don't want a tick'd off wife, and she probably already hates your mistres... the truck. So no need in making her hate it even more. work with her, not against her, and watch how much money you dump in it too... that may get her bent outta shape when all that's left for food money is enough for 6 packs of rommen noodles.

Thumbs up Re: I just got a crazy idea!!!

There is a balance between the wife and the truck hobby that is for sure and a wise man will learn how to develope this skill. Having said that take inventory of your situation and be honest. If your wife is really objecting to your truck usually there is a reason. Too much time in the garage, too much money in the garage, adding to credit card debt .... never go in debt for your hobby unless you can pay it off on your next statement. If money is tight do little improvements that take more time then money.

Put the wife and family first and the truck second and you will in the end keep both.

esll.

Re: I just got a crazy idea!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I went to a local car show this morning and got a lot of useful advise on fixing my rig. My wife was there to ask her share of questions and now I think she feels better. She has always been supportive but in the back of her mind it still bothers her and I know it.

I remember her taking 3 months to find the perfect Volkswagen Passat that she wanted and as a celebration I took her to eat at the Melting Pot. That set me back $135, for dinner.

We have one running vehicle (the VW) and we share it, and that is a pain in the tail.
