Engine dating

I am just wondering how I can tell what year my engine was built. It's a 350 in a 71 chevy truck that I just bought for parts...and for the engine. It would have been great if it was original but unfortunately the truck was an original six cylinder.

I looked at the forward portion of the right cylinder head on the block where the number is, from my knowlege, typically located on our era motors.

What else can I look for?

Thanks in advance.

Also once I get a number where can i decode it?

Re: Engine dating

Look for a series of letters such as ckt chj tkc tag (c=cars motors t=truck motors). This will tell you the year, what it came in, hp, trans used.
Decode it here:

(the block casting # will be behind the driver side head on the block)
