i want to pull the a/c any advice

living in Texas makes me want to keep it but, its lowering my horsepower. and i find it as an eyesore under the hood. and if i wanted to sell the ac (compressor ect.) how much could i make?

Is it a working system? New a/c run 1000 to 1500, and are a lot more efficient. Are you going to part it or sell complete? There was a compressor that sold for 99 cents on ebay and claimed it worked! The brackets sometimes bring more than the components

yes it does work; i am just looking to lighten the truck in hopes of gaining a few extra horse's

Well, in all reality the A/C doesn't rob any horse power from the engine when it is off. Look at it as a rather large idler pulley when not in use, it does however affect horse power and fuel economy when it is in use.

Just thought that I should throw that in, in case it sways you to keep your A/C setup intact. It might not be the best looking thing under the hood - but it is nice to have on those hot humid days!

Man, I wouldn't get rid of it if I was you. We've had some mild weather so far because of all the rain, but 100+ degrees are just around the corner. I'd sacrifice a few horses or mpg to have an a/c in those hot summer days.

You can always squeeze a few extra horses with engine mods but if you ever decide to sell the truck you can get more for it with A/C, for sure.

Have you thought about getting a smaller polished sanden? unit and aluminum brackets? That should clean it up and shed some pounds too. If you want your HP to go further, you could also trade the intake, heads and water pump for aluminum, manifolds for headers, and copper radiator for aluminum. If you're on a small budget, just phase it in a little at a time.

keep it intact, if you have a working unit its more valuable in your truck. you may not want to sell it today but you never know later. and I agree, if you dont run it, it aint robbing power.. arent there some attachments you can get that will temporally shut off the AC when you need more power? I think at one time you could get a AC cutoff switch for passing etc...

My advice........Don't pull the A/C. Nothing worse than not wanting to drive your project after all the $$$ and work just because it's miserably hot outside. Now if this is gonna be a track only pickup, by all means rip it out!

Agree with all of the above and would like to add that removing the entire setup won't save very much weight or gain you any HP.
Not sure what it all weighs but I have a complete setup in a big cardboard box that I can carry with not much effort.

I am in Dallas and there is no way I would disconnect a working a/c. Just dont use it unless you need to. I agree it is a eye sore under the hood but gosh, this is Texas!

Keep It. Also remember that the ac helps with defrosting or defogging your windsheild. and beleive me, I just got through installing the factory ac unit and its well worth it because I have been riding around in my truck every day for the past 2 months and when its hot outside it really sucks not having the ac working.

If you're looking to free up horses, just pull the belt off. Your engine wont have to even turn the pulley. If you want to see how it feels to free up that weight, just leave your spare tire and jack at home and maybe shed the front bumper. Okay - those are really bad ideas, but you'd get the feel.

If it were me, I would leave the AC intact and look for a low-buck power adder to compensate for the weight. Others have given some great suggestions here (headers to add a few HP and drop weight, for instance).

Your logic makes sense to me, but at the same time wait a month and your logic might change once it REALLY heats up! I live in Dallas too, and I won't drive without A/C.

The A/C might be an eyesore because it is dirty. Clean it up, paint/replace the brackets and it won't be an eyesore, but an eye catcher! An old truck with A/C??? People love it when they see it, and especially driving in it (assuming it is a driver).

Before you do it, drive around town for a couple of hours with the windows down and do not turn on the A/C.

Clean it. I've seen pictures of guys under hood heater/AC boxes that look pretty sharp.

I never did understand the shaved look on the firewall. But it is your truck, do what you want to it.

Just don't post here that you vented that R12 to the atmosphere. That is against the law.

I just spent some major $$$ on a vintage air set up and LOVE IT. I haven't noticed any HP drop or loss of power. I still don't have my dash back in the truck so fuel economy is unknown.

Keep it. Switch to an electric water pump and electric fan to gain HP. Just added an aftermarket A/C to my '67/283 and the mileage only dropped 1/3 of an MPG and that's here in Houston, so it runs all the time. Was unpleasant drivin' it before that.
