the speedo cable needs cleaned, and then lubed with graphite.

Re: Needle???
mine used to do that, i took out the inner cable, coated it with white lithium grease and slid it back in. Worked great!

Re: Needle???
why not use grease? White lithium grease resists all moisture and probably will never dissolve or age.

Re: Needle???
While I think Andy's right about using graphite, I didn't know about that when I lubed my cable with white lithium grease many, many years ago. It's still working fine.

Re: Needle???
I think the reason that they don't recommend grease, is that in dusty environments dirt tends to stick to the cable. Here in Texas we have a lot of caliche (limestone), gravel and dirt roads that are extremely dusty when dry. If you use any kind of grease or oil they get pretty nasty looking.
I'd say if its mostly city driving, lithium lube or a lite oil would be okay. |

Re: Needle???
You should be able to just reach behind the instrument panel where the cable connects and disconnect it from there. Pull the cable out from the sheath with a pair of needle nose or duckbills.
After cleaning and lubing (or graphiting) slide it back in until it's all the way in. |

Re: Needle???
the grease causes drag and over the years the accumulation of the metal residue cloggs the cable // thats why the manufacturers came up with the speedo cable lube as it polishs the inside of the housing for a friction free turning of the cable

Now if your casing looks dirty and you want to do a complete clean and lube then I would disonnect from trans end also and remove the whole cable and casing. |
