Opening in firewall?

What's this thing I'm pointing to in the pic? It's like a poorly cut off hose. Putting a finger in, I can feel what feels like some cottony like material.

That's for the clutch linkage, your truck used to be a 3 speed from the looks of that column.

Yep. It did. Hadn't even thought about that aspect. The truck was passed down from my wife's grandfather. As he was getting older, he had a new 350 put in it and had it converted to auto at the time. Unfortunately, it's a very crappy 3 speed. 700R4 or similar is coming in the future as soon as it's financially comfortable.
