Question 72 Gas Smell

I am a new member and hope I get this in correctly. I am finishing up on a 72 Cheyenne LB. I have completely redone the interior and have a strong gas odor when I drive. There are no leaks inside the cab. I have not replaced the cardboard cover yet, would that make that much difference? Hope to be here with pics next time.

i think all our trucks have that smell whether strong or weak. its just having the gas tank behind the seat.

Re: 72 Gas Smell

if the gas tank is sealed good, there will be no smell.
There are 3 common places on a 71/72 to cause this;
the O-ring on the sender
the neck going into the tank (caused by leaning on the filler as you gas up)
the rubber line that goes into the cab piller in back

Re: 72 Gas Smell

Another problem is when the tank is full it will speal out the cap while you drive and with the window down you will smell it at stop lights. My 71 was bad about doing this.
I don't mean it's just running out of the truck but splashing around in the tank and hitting the backside of the cap it will smell.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: 72 Gas Smell

I agree there should be no smell. If all is correct.

Re: 72 Gas Smell

I think the line running up the B pillar Andy mentioned is a vent line. I don't have a 71-72, so I don't know if it is an open line or if it have a breather on it, but if it is open, you can try to put a breather on it. They let air in but not out. I got these off eBay for my blazer tank conversion, and they would probably work in this situation to:

Re: 72 Gas Smell

I believe you guys are correct, I like the breathers glock showed, nice and pretty colors , too bad they'll be behind the seat and not seen. oh well, I think there were two types of tanks vented and non vented, I remember this due to buying a replacement gas cap, the cap makes a big difference in which tank you have. and yes , like others mentioned, sender oring, rubber lines, and for gods sake no leaks at carb..... good luck and hopefully you dont get too sick of the fumes if you end up living with it.

I agree as well. The cardboard has no impact on the smell of gas fumes.

Re: 72 Gas Smell

the vent isn't supposed to vent into the atmosphere or into the cab.. .those vent things will make things WAY worse. IIRC, they vent goes up to the charchol canister under the hood. This started in 71.
