454 is it worth it

Im got a chance to get a 454 for free all i have to do is remove it. it out of a winnie bago (speeling wrong most likly so house on wheels). it has very low miles and it spins freely. The idea is to use it in my 1970 chevelle but i will have to redo it so i have more hp not so much as torque. (i think it was compression that make the car 454 and the truck/ large vehical 454 different.

The chevelle is for a toy not a daily anything. when i biuld it it will be roller and not bored. id have to buy everything new cause everything i have is small block. so is it worth the time or should i keep and eye out for a 396.

The chelle as of know has a 350 bored .30 with 69 corvette double hump head and a very high cam. about 450 hp.

well that what i was told the engine had i never ran it all i know it a old drag race motor that used to haul ass. Maybe 400 but i would think it to buck less casue i think the guy made the head closer by sanding down the head to block i cant rememeber what that called.

Right now that engine s oly going 5 miles an hour and my speedometter say im going 60. so i think it might have some issues. I did a compression test and it was good. the motor sat for 15 years under a tarp so who know the guy that built it died so ur guess is as good as mine.

are you talking about decking the block, or milling the head?

i think decking and as for the heads i think he cleaned them up but i never took th heads of the block casue he told me to never try. so i didnt.

I would grab that transmission too. It's probably a Turbo 400 and possibly the straight cut gear 475 version ? Even a rebuidable core of either is worth getting and if it's still working thats even better.

There both free even if you don't use the tranny and motor in the chevelle I would still grab them up!

I think he means shaving the head...i did that to my motor not much difference in power but in compression.

There's no replacement for displacement-- a built 454 is better than a built 396. Most people replace the heads with new aluminum ones if they are looking for power anyway -- the old 990 heads are getting scarce

If its the standard chevy truck 454 it has the crappy small port heads, makes no power excpet good torque down low. Scrap the heads and get good aftermarket heads and use the shortblock, that will be a good engine then. Grab all the drivetrain parts you can if its free. Bet the block is a four bolt main and maybe has a forged crank.

Yes It's worth it, Some of the most fun I've had through the years is to buy cheap old engines that were built for work and using them for fun. If you are changing from small block to big block you need to know the differences. Small blocks can turn a lot of RPMs in a hurry, but Big blocks have never been designed for high RPMs unless they have the large rectangle port heads and a ton of machine work. Big blocks are alot more expensive to build, so you might think about getting it including the the drive shaft because the short shaft, bolt on yoke, is different from the long shaft and you may need it but you'll have everything in case someone wants to trade.
You might consider using it to trade for better small block parts and you wont have to change everything like brackets and hoses that will be in the wrong place. I'm building a truck right now with a 366 BBC truck Engine that has the Peanut heads on it, it will be an awsome ride with a TBI and Alcohol injection system and maybe a small turbo. the small port peanut heads as it turns out can build more torque at low speeds than any of the others. It's easiliest explained by thinking of your finger over the end of a water hose wich creates a lot of presser to a certain point. The truck I'm building will never be driven over the speed limit; so I'm going to end up with a torque monster/street truck that will get fair mileage. The last one I built got 15 MPG. The engine I just bought was resently rebuilt and I got it super cheap so the way I see it I can't go wrong, but you may want to think about your options before you cross over.

366? is that the "dump truck" big block? I am wrestling with a stock 454 now for a project that - like yours, will never see 80 mph except occasionally.
i have heard of people getting 14 or 15 mpg with a big block, but it is like Loch Ness and nice women who dont turn into b---ches when they get a ring-- something you read about but never see in real life.

The small turbo is more trouble than its worth for a moderate horsepower application -- it would be esier to use a nitrous plate system -- unless the turbo is being used to help scavenge exhaust gases more efficiently for a cleaner burn and better mpg's.
But even with all the torque in the world, a 1/2 ton truck only needs so much before it turns into an undriveable tire spinning piece of crap,(this happens at about the 500 lb/ft and above mark with a gas burner) so why not go for the hp's?

Something that is an undriveable burnout machine will get left in the garage in favor of the '03 silverdo or '99 accord or whatever the kind of DD's everybody has, after the shine fades on the tire chirp machine
