What caused this?

Melted my negative battery cable.

loose connection causes them to heat up. The other cable you have there should be replaced also. The end you have on it is supposed to be a temporary/emergency repair.

It looks like that end was soldered to the next section - what ever caused the overheating melted the solder - that doesn't look like a "splat" of copper there, just solder....

Yep, I agree, someone did a bandaid fix instead of replacing the cables. Replace both cables with new ones and make sure that they are routed so that they don't come in contact with the hedders or other problem areas that may cause them to rub.
