396 Engine Specs
I have purchased a 396 engine that came from a 69 GMC. What are the specs on this engine, such as oil capacity, spark plugs, HP etc. I know I drained a butt load of oil out of it, when I tried to measure how much it was I filled a gallon milk jug and almost (2) 2 liter soft drink bottles. My calculations of that comes to 7 to 8 quarts. Is that right? Darn. Any other info will be apprecitated.

Re: 396 Engine Specs
Thanks 67 C-30. I wanted to be sure because I took AC R44XLS spark plugs out of it.

Actually, now that I double checked, the R44XLS is what Advance Auto Part's website calls for. The book I have was published in 1973, so the numbers may have been superseded. Also double checked, and 6 qts is correct with stock oil pan.

Re: 396 Engine Specs
A subject to discuss on this engine: I am being told that the 70 and 71 possibly 72 trucks had a 400 option that was a 396 bored over. It came from the factory this way and had the 400 badge on front fenders. I was told to look around for this " not too many know about it" engine.
Is this truth or trash??? |

Re: 396 Engine Specs
I googled the subject and found out that there was a .030 over bored 396 as a Malibu option. Went out as the "Malibu 400" actualy a 402 c.i.
Was this also a truck option???? |

Re: 396 Engine Specs
Yes, it was actually only big block engine you could get. It replaced the 396.
