Automatic Transmission Crossmember Location

Hello all,

I've got a '72 GMC that originally had a manual tranny and am replacing it with a Turbo 350. I have the automatic crossmember primed and we are about to paint the frame. I want to bolt the crossmember in before so it is all painted at the same time, however, I have no idea where it bolts up.

The engine and tranny are still in another truck, so I can not set them in to get the location.

I could not find a previous post with the answer. Can anyone tell me the location, measurements, or any other way of find this out? If any other info is needed, let me know.

I don't have an measurements and mine would be off from a stock location as I have my engine mounted in the 6-cylinder position on late model engine stands. I just mounted mine and bolted the cross member top the tranny. marked my holes, then painted and bolted everything down. There were holes already in my frame, but I cannot for the life of me if I used two or had to drill all four new ones for my cross member.

My truck actually came with a I6, but I am replacing it with a 350 and moving into the correct position with new mounts. But again, the engine and tranny are still in the other truck and I can't put them in to find the location.

My GMC is a 71 with I6 and 4 speed. I am doing the same transfer and my frame has the holes already drilled for auto trans. Looks like atleast on min I just need to line up the crossmenber with thr holes that match it

On mine the crossmember didn't line up exactly so I just used one of the existing bolt holes. So far haven't had any problems.

If you have preexisting holes on the frame, I'd just go ahead an bolt it up and have it painted.

You can always move it later if you need to.

Brainspaz: I have a '71, not a '72. I suck. lol

If I am not mistaken, there are several sets of holes that I could use. That's why I was wondering if there was a measurement that would put me in the area. I may have to put it on and just move it around to see if I can line it up to a set of holes, but I would hate to paint it all, then find out I bolted it in the wrong location, and ruin the paint to move it again.
