...and, you only need to have 10psi per 1000rpm's.

Re: bad oil pressure

the tube may have fallen off! not a bad idea. the plugs were all put in when i built it. all the clearences were fine. it ran real well for like 20000 miles than i decided to pull the motor to do suspension/ frame/ cab work on it. than when i put it back in the oil pressure was fine untill a few days after driving it. it runs good still it doesnt click or act like its not getting oil. however i dont really want to test my luck .

Re: bad oil pressure

What if ... the tabs on the pump drive shaft sheared off. Low rpms could have enough friction to barely turn the pump but more rpms would slip causing lower pressure.

Re: bad oil pressure

Personally I would have shut it down the instant I noticed no pressure and dropped the pan to look.I had a buddy once ("nah,it won't hurt it") who wreaked a 350 by running it with the gauge near 0.

Re: bad oil pressure

i burned so many bearings on my first motor. it was a used motor to begin with, and i figured 10-12 psi was normal because that's what it always ran. i replaced rod bearings twice until i needed to replace main bearings..

then i bought a new motor the new motor ran at 20 psi at idle up to 60 psi cruising. now i clearly see my old engine had a bad oil pump.

Re: bad oil pressure

Is your distributor fully seated? It could be stepping up??? Maybe?

Was the pump pickup fully seated?

Re: bad oil pressure

check the pickup for debris. i had a problem with one of my inline 250's where, when the engine would warm up, the oil pressure would drop drastically at idle. ends up that a wad of gunk caked inside the top of the valve cover dropped off and made its way down to the pan. instant pickup clog, instant drop in oil pressure.

of course, it can't hurt to check your pressure gauge/line for accuracy.

Re: bad oil pressure

check your oil filter. When you remove it cut it open with a filter cutter and make sure it isn't collapsed.

Re: bad oil pressure

Also, check for crimped oil lines. If you had it off an disconnected and reinstalled it, something may have bent or crimped the tubing.

Re: bad oil pressure

When you took the motor out to do that frame work or whatever - did you take anything off the motor? (Distributor?)

If it was running fine for 20k and this just started happening, I would guess something got into the pickup tube silicone gasket maker is good @ doing that if you really slathered it on the oil pan etc.

my next guess would be the pickup fell off and the higher RPM "0" reading is because the hole the pump isn't low enough in the pan.

Re: bad oil pressure

well i pulled the oil pan today and the pickup was still on, and the drive gear was hooked up. so the only possibilities left could be a clogged oil pressure line or a mechanically bad oil pump, or the collapsed oil filter idea
