1-ton Project

I figured I'd start a progress thread on my old truck since I'm starting to make some progress on it. First, a little history;


I use to work for a company (quit after graduating community college and going into to a 4-year universtiy) that used this truck as their main welding vehicle. For decades it mainly sat in a parking lot moving back and forth between our various shops spread out about 4miles or so from each other. A few years ago the welder blew up and the truck just sat. I picked it up for $700 as a project and hopefully maybe even make a buck off of it. It's a 1971 1-ton with a 350. It runs good, but needs work.



Here is what it looked like when I got it:







Here it is now with new front end, and thats about as far as I've gotten besides some brake stuff and a few loose ends.















Going to paint the inside white or black (door panels are blue and brown) and the seat black. Going to re-paint the bed black, but still deciding on the body color. I was thinking flat-black, but that color is everywhere these days. Currently I'm leaning towards a flat-red. Way too much truck for me, but it's pretty fun driving, espicially around campus trying to find a parking spot that I can fit it in.

Solid looking truck. Welcome to the 1 ton club. I love driving my dually, I always park 3 miles away from the mall when we take it and generally in the middle of two spots.

Another 1-ton member here. That is a nice little dumper! I am going to try to add one of those to my collection after I finish my dually pickup.

Been taking care of a few mechanical problems as of lately. Took it out on the interstate for the first time in probably decades, and the axle seat went out. They were replaced only a few years ago right before the welder blew up, so it's been just sitting around since then.


Any ways, I'm getting ready to paint it in the next few weeks and I'm still not quite sure on the color....... Flat black is cool, but everybody runs it, and I want a little more color. Was thinking a flat red in a spray can, but the stuff I keep coming across is a just a little too brown/rusty colored. Been painting the bed semi-gloss black though and it's looking fairly good, well, good for a 36 year old work truck anyways.

What did you do with the factory mirrors?

Nothing, for whatever reason the old company I worked for changed the passenger side one for whatever reason..... kind of looks odd I know.


I was thinking on the paint, and the lower bottom half of the truck, that line the runs to the bottom and around the front fenders; I as thinking of painting that black, and the the rest of the cab red. What do you all think??

That grille you installed on it is pretty nice. Wish I could find one cheap. LOL

Best part is, that grill was free!!! My bosses friend was using our shop to do a lot of work to his 71 Chevy truck, and one of things he was doing was putting on a 67' front end. I asked him what he was going to do with the old front end (he didn't want to take it home) and let me have it!!!


Needless to say that made my day!!!

I like the idea of a two tone paint job. I say don't go flat colors but that's your choice.

The bottom part of the bed on yours looks the same as the bed was on my '67 C-30 when it was a flatbed. Is it wood floored or as it been capped with steel?

The wood floor is still there, and is in decent shape but some of the corners have rotted. Big steal plates have been welded on over the wood though, and a small hole cut in the center in order to get to the drain plug on the welder that use to sit on it.
