14bolt free floater and D60??? or not? I dontknow how to tell

Thse are the only pics I have. Can any one ID these from the pics I have? These are under a 1970? blazer.

I can only tell by scraping the junk off and looking for the 60 or 44 on the front.

Also is there a way to tell a FF 14bolt by looking at it?

thanks

FF is on the rear there is a hub type asembly sticking out and is not just flat. It will look like the front axle with the stub sticking out.

awesome Thanks for the fast replies. Looks like that front is a D44 having 2 Ubolts The rear is a FF I have a pic of the outside.

Not the diamond in the rough I was hoping for.

The rear axle in the pic is a 14 bolt F.F. The semi floaters have 14 bolts holding the cover on but the diff. cover is shaped different.

They are totally different axles, the only thing they share is the fact that they have 14 bolts holding the cover on.

The rear axle in the picture above is definitely a 10 1/2" full floater. The front looks like a 44 to me, but you can't really tell from those pictures.

Yes, I know the axles are differnet. My question is does the non-floater have a 9.5" ring?

Yes.

As far as the skinny tubes, my Dodge Dana 60 has pretty skinny tubes. 3-1/8" IIRC. But, that is definitely a 44...you can see the castle nut on the pass. side knuckle.

Re: 14bolt free floater and D60??? or not? I dontknow how to tell

OK,OK,Ok. I know the the 44, 60 and corp 14 ff are different. Look at the 1st post, I know this. 60's have 3 U-bolts, 44's have 4 & corp 14 ff axles mount at the hubs.

What I was wondering is, is the corp 14 bolt NON ff a 9.5" ring gear? And if so, is that why the housing is differnet?

a 14B FF and 14SF are entirely different animals.

a 14SF use C-clip axles, if I recall correctly and a 9.5" ring gear. It's more like an evolved 12B then it's bigger brother, the 14BFF.

14BFF has a bolt on pinion support with an extra pinion bearing.

Yea, all i'v ever run are FF. I was trying to keep my brain updated. We twist off to many axles to run anything else. A long magnet in a PVC tube is way easier to fix a broken axle at the track than cover disassembley.

Has any one compared the new GM axles to the 14bff I was told the axles in the new trucks were way bigger Im sure more expensive if you break an axle but you may not break them as often.

The New AAM (American Axle Manufacturing) 14B axles are 11.5" ring gear vs the old 14B's 10.5"... that's they're the smaller of the two!

They're putting a 11.5" 14B front into the Dodge Cummins and D-max's.

12.5" 14B rear!!!

They're HUGE!

They look huge the axle in my d-max is massave compaired to the 14blt but you never know what your going to find in side. I would like to see a side by side compairison of the ring gear and the axle shafts.

I picked up two GM 2.5 ton steer axles three weeks ago. Now I'm in the market for a Rockwell 106 w/ 6.20's in it. Now, these are HUGE

If there price would come down we would probably see more of them in use but the savlage yards around here are still selling them for almost 2k thats more then I want to spend on an axle.

Re: 14bolt free floater and D60??? or not? I dontknow how to tell

The duramax is has IFS so does it really matter as much? I haven't owned a 1ton chev with IFS but i have owned 1/2tons that were really bad about wearing out and breaking steering parts. Much more than any solid axle truck I have run.

Does the ring gear really matter that much if its not the weak link? The CV joints and half shafts would go before the ring and pinion wouldn't it?
