a little more dana 44 help please

I have my front axle apart and have been going thru it with new seals and repacking bearings. Before I go to reassemble it I noticed a missing piece on one side. On the outer axle there is a metal dust cover pressed onto the axle, then there should be a spacer and then the needle bearing and of course the seal. I am missing the spacer on one side. Does anyone have a part # for this spacer?

Also on the side missing the spacer, the metal pressed on dust cover is not flush with where the axle steps down. Shouldn't this be flush with where the axle tappers down to where the nedle bearing rides?

Ok, I know I put stuff back together so I can take it apart quick, but I don't remember anything except the dust cover between the housing and the stub shaft. Housing, seal, joint, spindle????

Re: a little more dana 44 help please

I am learning the correct terminology for these parts little by little. ya, I have the slingers, they are pressed onto the axle shaft as far as they can go right up to the yokes and pretty much rusted to the axle. But one side had a small spacer or bushing that slid on between the needle bearing and end of spindle shaft where it meets the slinger. I hunted down some exploded views and I guess they call it a outer axle spacer. The only thing that tipped me off to go looking was one side had it and the other didn't. If neither side would have had it I would never have caught it.

Also on one side my slinger is on as far as it can go, and like I said pretty much rusted to the axle, but the outside edge of the slinger is not flush with where the axle tappers down to where the bearing rides. It hangs over about 1/16".

The original ones are bronze or oillight. The ones you get with the kit now are nylatron. Which is oil impregnated nylon. A new one will come with the needle bearing kit.

Re: a little more dana 44 help please

I just stopped at a chevy dealer and from what I can gather the spacers were not used on 1970 & earlier, They had 2 discontinued part numbers, one for 71-72 and another one for 72. Depending on what number was stamped on your axle determined which spacer you got but I can't believe there could be that much difference between them. Someone at some point in time must have rebuilt the one side of my axle and put the spacer in.

Re: a little more dana 44 help please

I am going to put them in. We found a chevy dealer in Iowa thru the parts locater with 3 of them sitting on the shelf. They were discontinued in 1989 so he wants to get rid of them bad. $10 for all three shipped to my door didn't sound to bad to me.
