exhaust tips/sound level
is it true that the shorter the tip the louder the exhaust will be? im thinking of cutting the tips down a bit instead of running it open and risking losing the mpg

Re: exhaust tips/sound level
more pipe or more bends will always make it quieter.
Not necessarily enough difference that you would care. cut a half a foot off, and you probably can't hear the difference. Cut the tailpipe off at the muffler, and it will be a good bit louder usually. This also varies with pipe size, and is a bunch of voodoo. Lucky for you exhaust is easy to reattach if you decide you shouldn't have cut it.

Re: exhaust tips/sound level
A lot of it has to do with where it exits, as to how loud it is to the driver
Say you ran it all the way out the back, it's prolly about as loud as if it was right behind the cab just you don't hear it as much cuz it's not as close to you |

Re: exhaust tips/sound level
If you like it louder, cut a bit off the ends of the tail pipes(16-18"), & add a set of 3 1/2" dia x 16 or 18" long chrome or stainless "cans" (tips). That will make it bark L
