Cold weather and going topless
Was a brisk 38 degrees this morning and since the kids didn't have school I decided I'd take the topless K5 to work today. We did have parent/teacher conferences but the kids were going to ride with my wife so I didn't have to worry about freezing them out.
Well, I head out to the shop to get the K5 and my 11 year old daughter comes out a minute later (of course in short sleeves and crop pants - she's a little oblivious to cold) and she says "Were taking the Blazer?!" and I say well, I am but you need to ride with mom." She tells me nope, she's riding with me and, of course, being the great dad that I am, I tell her she has to wear a heavy coat. So I'm backing the K5 out of the shop with her outside of the shop. I stop to close up the shop and she tells me she loves the way the K5 sounds. Guys, does it get any better than that?!!!!! So we head out and it isn't too bad, I grabbed a blanket so she could wrap it around her legs since her crop pants are kinda short and she looks pretty darn happy. We get to school and she tells me that was pretty fun, and of course she's right about that. I was glad I had grabbed my winter cap, but the drive wasn't that bad - cause, come on, any time your driving your K5 things are good Well, there's my story. My daughter Alexandra makes me proud yet again

Re: Cold weather and going topless
I like it when our children love our K5's, esp. when we drive topless and in cold weather!

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Since I plan on never putting my top back on, and believe it or not it CAN get cold here in AZ, I thought I would take an idea from the snow mobile guys and re-route my defroster hoses so that I can put them inside my jacket. Should keep toasty that way!

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Did the same thing with my 4 year old boy last week. Was about 50 in the morning but warming up to 75-80 for the ride home from work. He thought it was fun wrapping all up.
The bikini top helps with keeping the wind off us alot.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
My daughter loves riding in "daddy's bouncytruck," but with the rain in the Pacific Northwest, I can't run topless all year round.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Haven't got a Bestop on my current K5, nor do I have kids, but with my previous ride we used to love Blazing around all winter either full convertible- or safari-style (sides rolled up) with the heater blasting our legs warm. When it got really cold, I kept a pair of old sleeping bags stowed away. You could wrap yourself up and be comfy no matter what the mercury was reading. Did get some funny looks, though!

Re: Cold weather and going topless
At least you have a soft top. I got caught out in the rain a lot this summer, but I believe I have perfected the blue tarp special. It will stay on at free way speeds!

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Heated Seats is what I want to do to mine next year. No point this year since I
don't have space for both toys in the garage during the winter. Have to put top back on and move it out for Mommy to have her warm spot back. Next year we are building a new addition and everyone gets there own bay. Then top is SOLD.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
No it doesn't! Great story!
My 10 year old boy loves my Blazer and it's all torn apart and hasn't run in months, not to mention the tub that is still on it has more rust than metal. Sometimes those comments from the little ones keep you going.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
A couple summers ago my kid and I went on a 300 mile (round trip) camping trip in the topless Blazer. But she really loves to go 4 wheeling. Her favorite thing is when I let her drive (steer) around the flats of the off road park.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Guys, I'm a wimp! Today it was 33 degrees when I left for work and I decided not to drive the K5. Kids didn't have school today so wouldn't have frozen them on the drive. Half way to work I was regretting not driving it as I haven't driven the K5 in a few days. I will hang my head in shame the rest of the day

Re: Cold weather and going topless
This is the exact reason I went ahead and bought my dream. I'm going to teach my 5 yo to wrench on the truck just like I did when I was little. He'll catch me working on the truck and say "I love your red truck daddy" and I'll reply with "No son, it's OUR truck" and he's grinning from ear to ear.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
Have to jump in on this...
Bought the '72 this summer for my boy who's 14...figured it to be a project for the two of us, his first car, etc., and it's been a blast working on it, driving it topless all summer. I put the top back on two weeks ago, but just before... We have baseball workouts at the high school every Wednesday afternoon--I'm the freshman coach and the boy will be playing this year. We made a deal that I'm always going to pick him up in "his" truck. I get there about 3:30 in the afternoon, still plenty of sunshine and unseasonably warm. We go thru the workout and it's over around 6:00 pm--still light, but you can tell it's not summer any more. Then, he lobbies to stay and watch the homecoming festivities--a powderpuff football game. Over at 9:30, and at a cool 35 degrees, he announces that I need to give four other kids a ride home... Heater on high, glass packs screaming, these boys pile in and off we go. They sang and laughed the 15 miles home, oblivious to the cold and told me over the next few days that my son sure is lucky to have a truck like that. Pretty cool!

Good times. I hope the little one is as enthused. If she'll help me on the next project, she can inherit the Fox.

Re: Cold weather and going topless
This is a little off topic but since it deals with kids and Blazers, I'll post it. What's funny is my 12 year old daughter told me once that she did not want to ride in the Blazer unless the top was off. She said it was to loud and only with the top off would it be worth putting up with the noise. A month ago she surprised though, and said she wanted me to drive drop her off at a church function in the Blazer with the top on and all. I asked her "why" and she said it was prettier then my daily driver that had mud all over the side of it at the time. When I picked her up, I was driving my regular rig instead. She got in and really seemed upset that I was not in the Blazer. As I pulled away a boy from the group waved at her . Then it hit me, she was using my Blazer to impress that boy. I think that will not be allowed to drive it until she married now.
