Driveshaft

For all you guys that swapped over to a 700R4 how long is your driveshaft? i found a site corvettejunk.com that has several driveshafts. Most are 29 1/2 would that work? i was reading somewhere on here the other day a debate of using a one piece or a two piece driveshaft. and he had lengths on there but not sure where it was. anyone know what diff lengths it can be? thanks

Re: Driveshaft

I took a measurement before I removed the T350, and another when the 700R4 was installed. I took my driveshaft to a shop in Longview, Texas, they cut off the difference and balanced the shaft. You can also use the difference in length of the old trany and the 700R4.

Re: Driveshaft

surefire way to have to get two or more driveshafts is to take someone elses measurements

to use a corvette driveshaft you'd probally need to cut anywhere from 4-5 feet off of your frame and move the wheels foward// or get a tranny with a 4-5foot long tailshaft

Re: Driveshaft

i guess i wrote that wrong. Does anyone know the length the driveshaft is using a 700R4? i'm in iraq and wanting to get the swap done before i get home. I just don't know any driveshaft shops back home. I also don't know how much it would be to get it cut down if i need it cut

I paid $150 to get shorten 3", a new carrier bearing, and new universal joint installed.

Re: Driveshaft

3" off is what I have been told. That is if you are using a 350 turbo with a 6" tail housing.

Re: Driveshaft

I converted from A manual to A TH400 and went with A 1 piece driveline.

Re: Driveshaft

I'm gonna take a picture of my tranny and carrier bearing when everything (except the drice shaft) is installed, then take it to the drive line place and have them mark on the picture where they want me to measure from - I really don't want to have to do it more than once.

Re: Driveshaft

With the transmission in place, measure from the center of the transmission yoke to the center of the yoke on the rear end. By that, I mean the plane in which the U-Joint cross and roller would be placed.....not the center where the yoke is attached to the output shaft or the nut that holds the yoke to the pinion.

If the slip portion is on the end of the drive shaft, that needs to be inserted into the tranny before measuring. Bear in mind that there needs to be some room for the slip yoke to move in/out of the tailshaft housing. An exception would be for a splined slip joint in the driveshaft.
