Intake and carb swap
I am going to pull the truck in the garage in a few weeks and put dual exhaust on it to wake up the neighbors. It currently has the original 2bbl carb and I am considering a 4bbl swap when i do the exhaust. My question is will a 4bbl make a significant power difference? Any suggestions for an intake and carb to use? the truck is a 307, 4spd, 410 rear, 3/4 ton. If i do a intake swap, what else should I be doing besides a HEI ignition? I am not goiing to put a cam in it until i rebuild the motor, hopefully in a few years.

Re: Intake and carb swap
I'd go Edelbrock on both the intake and the carb. Headers and HEI will round it out nicely. I have this exact combo on my truck.
FYI, the 1405 has better power than the 1406 when it comes to carbs. It has slightly bigger jets in the primaries.

Re: Intake and carb swap
The swap to HEI will likely get you more power than the 4bbl conversion will, but i would expect a 30 - 40 hp increase if your engine is in otherwise good condition, for the whole combo (Performer RPM intake, carb, a well built set of headers, and HEI )

Re: Intake and carb swap
Ill concur with what they've said- though I prefer the 1406 on a DD. Run an RPM edelbrock intake (or the Wiend Team G if you prefer), and go with a Summit brand HEI dizzy. A set of Hooker comp headers are cheap from Northernautoparts.com and you will enjoy the performance increase with little change at all in fuel economy- perhaps even an increase.
As far as the 1405 performing better... everyone should have a jet kit and tune their carb to their preferences. However, Edelbrocks are known for running well right out of the box. I ran a 1406 on my SBC for years and never touched it until I got into racing.
