Powder Coat vs. Paint

A week ago or so, I replied to a thread and a board member was asking whether or not he should powder coat or paint the hood hinges and lock assembly in his truck. I believe someone said yes and another did not suggest it due to the moving parts. I mentioned a spray can product that I picked up at a swap meet in Englishtown, New Jersey. There were a few different finishes but 2 in particular.

The 1st was called Cast Blast, giving the fresh look of cast iron. It's used for master cylinder, power steering pump, sway bars and other front end parts.

The other product gives the mild unfinished look. It's called Stainless Steel. It's recommended for the hinges and hood lock assemblies.

It's pricey (1-6 cans, $12.95 Shipping at $9.00 per can) Unless you buy it at a swap meet then it's $7.00 cash/carry.

Unfortunatly, I could not bring my cans on the plane, but left them with my Uncle in Jersey and he says it works great. They don't have a website but here is the company info: Ray Brandon will answer. Ask him what swap meets he will be at. He said Z-Hills, FL next week, Georgia and Ohio are coming up.

Re: Powder Coat vs. Paint

Harry,

Good stuff to know. I powdercoat on the side and I do not do the hood springs unless you have a spring "stretcher". The coils are very close together and its hard to get a good coverage and can stick to each other if your not careful...lol Depends on the vehicle.

I will definetly check this guy out as I go to Zephyrhills at least once a year. Thanks for the good info.

Do you go to the Turkey Rod Run? Last year was a good year. Bought an OEM Rear Step Side Bumper and a new wiring harness. Mine has hacked beyond fixing.

I'm in the process of doing a leaf to training arm swap, so I'll be looking for a Super Track Bar. I'll have a 3" front drop (Lowering Springs) and a 5-6" drop in the back with the Super Track Bar and Bags.

Also looking for some wheels. May go 18's or 20's. Must be 6 lug.

Re: Powder Coat vs. Paint

Sir Fisher, swap meet is on 301 in February and November each year. I am going to Webster this Sunday to try and find what I need for the 67.

myoldchevytruck...Sorry, I do not get to go with 4 kids...lol Its crazy there! Sounds like a cool ride you have going there. I just bought mine about a week ago and it is a SWB fleetside with a 69-72 nose on it. One of the things I want to switch back to.

Talk at ya later

Re: Powder Coat vs. Paint

I powder coated my springs and hinges. You do need to leave the springs on so they wont stick together when curing. The powder should be just fine during the stretching process too. Here are a few pictures to show how tuff this stuff is.
