Noob Here with a 72 GMC 4x4 I Got Yesterday

Hope this is posted in the right place etc. I'll try some pictures later. I'll be sure to try searches first before asking a bunch of questions.
Drove about 400 miles with weather checked tires, leaking gas (just a little), no headlights, apparently no thermostat to the temp was all over the place, loose steering - what a fun trip
So for now Ol Blue has a new home.

Re: Noob Here with a 72 GMC 4x4 I Got Yesterday

First of all welcome to the board I think you will like it here. It's a great place to learn all there is about ur truck and so fourth.

As far as youre truck I would check the bolts that hold the colum to the dash or if it is a tilt wheel then it is wore out and needs to be ither rebuilt or replaced ur call.

Leaking gas is easy a new hose or some teflon tape and ur usally good to go.

As far as the headlights are concerned thats a wire issue there should be a lil spot on the passenger side fender under hood that has a fuseable linked wire going to it as well as a few others. You might check that fuse and see if it is good if not then get the meter and start testin wires from the headlights all the way to the switch.

Hope this helped and again WELCOME

Re: Noob Here with a 72 GMC 4x4 I Got Yesterday

Headlights fixed - it was the dimmer.
Brake lights fixed - it was the switch at the pedal.
Engine crossmember re-bolted with grade 8 hardware instead of the old stuff that was falling out.. Had my nephew turning wrenches to learn - his first time... Anyone know the torque value for the engine crossmember bolts?
Also had the nephew change the oil and filter.
Put a new thermostat in - wasn't one in there when I opened it up....

Here's a few pix for starters.

niiiice! yep, the first trip home is always interesting, but that's what it's all about. welcome aboard from Shawnee, KS!!!

I think if you kick the FJ to the curb, it will just fit in the garage! (you gotta keep the SSR in there though!)

Sure but he's a really slow worker.. One catch though. You need to take his Dad, it's a package deal.

It's 35 years old, so it has some issues. Tires are dry rotted so they are on the real soon list as is the cracked windshield and next weekend I drop (not literlly I hope) the transfer case to check out the supposedly cracked trans to transfer case adapter. I'll probably rebuild the transfer case while it's out and may do the trans at the same time. Also need to replace all the mounts. Oh well, step at a time.

Honestly you really don't need to rebuild those transfercases. You have a NP 205. All you probably need are some new seals and a new bushing on the shifter and maybe bolt (mine was bent and made it hard to shift).

I'll keep that in mind. I need to get things cleaned up and apart so I see if there any issues. If it just needs new seals and such, that's all it'll get.

Welcome!!!From a fellow K/2500 owner. That`s a nice`72.I drove my `72GMC home about the same distance tossing the wheel like a boat from all the play. After my test drive I mentioned the play.He said,"You`ll get used to it".All these years I thought you were supposed to fix that stuff and now I learn all you have to do is get used to it.

Look here. Not all bolts are torqued by the location. Most can be torqued by the size and thread. If the bolt passes through and is nutted on the other side or goes into steel, use the chart. For engine specific bolts see the manufacturer specs.

Forgot to say welcome. Nice truck.
