04 speedometer troubles!
Hi everyone, I'm having some troubles with my 04 1 ton crew cab 4x4. Yesterday I was driving in the driveway and the speedometer stayed at 45 mph. I shut it off, no difference. When I restarted it, it dropped to 35. I took it for a drive, and it stuck at 40 when I slowed down. It seems to be close on reading after I go faster than where it stuck at last time. I don't know if it could be a ground, the speedometer is toast, or what to look at. I did crawl under and check out the loom and didn't see any connection problems or damaged wires. Any ideas you have would be appreciated!
thanks |

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
It's probably the speedo itself. It seems to be a common problem that the gauge servo's go bad. Take a look at ebay. There is a guy selling rebuilt cluster there with improved servo's. That's probably the best route to go.

to get it back to zero, turn the key to on, then back off. It will come down a little bit at a time. They do have a tendency to stick. I second teh rebuilt cluster idea.

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
Delphi had a major problem with the speedo motors in 2004. I would recommend contacting the AC Delco instrument repair center below to either have them repair yours or exchange it.

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
If you have less than 70,000 GM will replace it free of charge. Go see your local dealer service dept.

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
I have the notice on my 03 GMC and it states exactly that! The warranty is extended on the gauges ( speedo, fuel, etc) to 7 yr 70,000 miles.

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
that warranty extension is only on 03/04 models, but i will say at the dealership i work at we replace about 4 instrument clusters a week between me and the other chevy mechanic, ranging from 2002s up to 2006s.
per GM service info: "Condition Some customers of 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to September 28, 2007, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider. Vehicles Involved Involved are certain 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:"

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
If it's not one of the models covered under the extended program the service manager can also "A authorize" the repair and get it covered for you, if he wants to

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
Thanks everyone. I talked to the dealership I got the truck from. before I did I did a search online. It turns out the reason they have the program for the 70000 miles is a class action law suit. at first the dealership didn't want to do anything besides charge me $350 for the cluster + labor to fix a truck with approx 40k on it. So I asked the service manager if I needed to join the class action law suit before they could take care of this problem. Ya know I have NEVER seen anyone change their tune so fast. Soon as I mentioned it they were happy to take care of this problem at no cost! I took the truck in yesterday for them to get the hours and miles. I'm suppose to take it back next week for the new dash. They are replacing the entire unit because the other gauges tend to go out shortly after the speedo. So once again, thanks for the input. This problem is solved!

Re: 04 speedometer troubles!
Well everyone I took the truck in for the dealership to install the new dash today. While I was there they told me the dash problem is now going to be a full recall for 03 and 04 trucks. Since the 05 and 06 use the same cluster the rest should be coming soon.
