70 swb question

My buddy has a 70 swb GMC with leaf springs in the rear. I thought all the early trucks had coil springs? All the brackets and mounts appear factory installed. It was originally a 6 cyl, but has a 350 now.

So did GM make leaf spring trucks in 70?

Thanks!!

Re: 70 swb question

Most are coil but there are quite a few leaf spring trucks. I have a '70 Chev with rear leafs.

Re: 70 swb question

as I understood it, the half ton chevy's all got springs while the 3/4 tons got leafs. Is that not true?

This is typically what you'll find out there on the street and at the farms, but the fact of the matter is that coil springs were standard on the 1/2 ton chevys, but leafs could be had as an option. With the GMC's leafs were the standard while coils could be ordered. Also with the coil sprung trucks you could add a pair of auxillary 1/2 leafs which made up the Heavy Duty option.
Now 3/4 tons I'm not sure what was standard, optional or what not, but leafs feel right for the standard configuration with coils being optional. I don't even know if there is such a thing as 3/4 ton coil springs???

Re: 70 swb question

I have an original 1971 GMC with coils also. GM would build just about anything you wanted back then...

HUMMMMM

My 69 GMC is coil, and my 72 GMC parts truck is coil as well. Both half tons.

My 70 GMC 3/4 ton parts truck is leaf.

Re: 70 swb question

ok... the 1/2 leafs were not an HD option, they were simply overload springs.
There was no HD option... just HD parts.
67 - 72 chevy, bit 10 and 20 series, came with coils, and leafs were optional.
GMCs, in 69, coils were standard in 1/2 ton... I believe all other GMCs, 1500 and 2500's, 67 - 72 (other than the 69 C/1500) were leaf.
