It Pays to know your trucks.
I had an doctor appointment last week and on the way I see a 70 4x4 swb for sale! So on the way back I stop to take a look at it because from the road it really looked sharp. The first red flag was it has a 396 BB w/396 emblems on the fenders. Well I thought you could not get a factory BB in a 4x4 (67-72) plus in 70 it should have been a 402BB. Then from my vast education from this board I thought lets see what the VIN # is so here it is: CE140B133145. Not a 4x4 but a 2x2 (I Think) Then there was the case of magic paint. This truck had what I would a maco blue lite special. Not that maco is bad because for the $$$ they do a nice job but...when I put my fingers on the upper windshield frame on the inside it made snap, crackle, & pop, sounds and then flakes of new paint would fall off showing a lot of rust problems. The whole upper frame looked like it had major rust problems that was hidden by fresh paint. I called the owner up and he said it was all original as far as he knew. He said the price of $13,500 was negotiable. He said if I wanted to take it out for a drive to let him know in advanced because he keeps it garaged in the winter. This is why it pays to educate oneself and ask questions. I wonder who will end up buying that "all original" 70 4x4 swb truck?

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
ouch - 13,500 for a buggy that will start showing rust in a year or two --
your right - 4x's were all small blocks and i didnt think the 402 ever had a dedicated emblem, i thought they either used 396 or 400 emblems what color was this truck? Hopefully all the board members in your area will be able to steer clear |

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
You will probably see that truck for sale for a long time. It isn't going anywhere at that price in the condition you described.
What's a 2x2? An all wheel drive motorcycle?

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
Ok how do I get out of this one. I know...a 2x2 is someting you should get hit with if one paid $13,500 for this truck. Oh yes...the 402 emblem was a test to see if you all would catch it?

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
they make an all wheel drive motor cycle, i think the military used it. My auto teacher showed me them, real neat but not very fast, just kinda chug along.

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
Haha.. I always take a look when I see a 67-72 for sale (and 73-87s as of late) and notice these sorts of things. I wouldnt shoot down a sale, but its hard to turn the other cheek when I hear someone being blatantly lied to by someone in person. Although, I suppose they may not know their lying...

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
The last time I saw that much inaccuracy I called out the seller to their face. Sometimes they have no idea what they are selling so it helps to "educate" them a bit...

there actually is an off-road motorcycle called a Christini, based on a current Honda 250 motocross bike, that is 2wd ----- its a little heavy for straight up motocross, but supposedly its very good for enduro and hare scrambles type competition , where endurance and good traction is very important |

Truly nai've people rarely overprice things (i met someone who was selling a cherry 65 Impala SS 327 in unrestored survivor condition and in great shape for $3000- oh i wish i had the $$ at the time - and i kept my lips sealed tight - it was a 10-12,000$ car, but they wanted a 6-4 or 6-3--(dumb ass) ) -------- but if the guy is a jerk, sometimes i will nitpick something for fun Last edited by streetstar; 12-07-2007 at 11:57 PM. |

Unfortunately there are gullible people out there that are willing to pay more than they should for something that isn't what it is represented as. Wasn't it Barnum that said "there is a sucker born every day"?

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
Alot of people say what they believe and just don`t know any better.Alot of people buy stuff like that and feel good about it.They just don`t know.
Although no BBC K-models were made,in`70 it was still being called a 396.In`71 they started using the 400 badge which was the 402 one...no 400SBC yet either. Alot of people are not aware that a truck can rust up top and not just the bottom.Wannabee experts will crawl all around under a truck and never look for a rusted cowl or header panel. This guy had high hopes with that price,no doubt.I have a neighbor that buys stuff for about what it`s worth and sets them out at double the price. He usually sells them, too.Alot of guys don`t want to show what they don`t know,it`s a macho thing, and don`t ask enough questions. If you don`t ask there`s no lie. They find out later they got a bum deal. Most have no idea what it costs to get them right. You could give someone some of these trucks and not be doing them any favors,if they don`t have what it takes to get them right. I just walk.Sometimes I`ll point out a little thing or two just to let them know it ain`t all that. Most of these guys could care less.It does pay to know, that`s for sure.

That's not a problem...that's an addiction. I think from my research there is no cure for this type of addiction. Well maybe one...the "wife".

Re: It Pays to know your trucks.
This all goes to show...one needs to educate oneself before buying. When I first started to think about buying a truck I did a lot of research and accidently found this board. I really was looking to purchase a 53-55 Chevy truck but I stumbled onto my 70cst by chance. Because I had been reading all the topics on this board I knew this truck was original and a keeper ($2400 70cst 402 BB with tons of options). Thats why I say the membership fees are worth twice the price. (just kidding Josh and LIz)
