Caddy Swap update! (finally)

Well, I was able to make a little headroom today. Since the new place came up, I haven't even been able to untarp it, but today, i figured there was a few things I could do with out any cash on hand, so here is how it went;
I started by altering the motor mount towers for the funny Caddy motor mounts...

I actually had to hog out both of the holes...one V8 hole. and one inline hole. I was using a 5/8 inch drill bit.

For lack of better tools, this is how I had to join the 2 holes together.

I had to use a small spacer on the drivers side, mostly to make the angles right, but I wanted to move it over a bit too.

You can see, I still need to beat on this frame rail a little, and the towers are not bolted in yet, but it is sitting there with no hoist.

The engine is quite a bit higher than I had first thought it would be...which is a good thing. Look at the pan clearance!

I was kinda scared about this...but it all looks pretty good to me. I added plug wires, and even without the looms, they have plenty of room.

And here is why I like the added height...PLENTY of room now. Also, instead of rerouting my brake lines, now I only need to slightly move them.

What's the cubic inch on that Cad motor? Is that the 502?

Cad makes 425-472 and 500.
I believe Andy's is a 425.
502 is a chevy motor. Different animal I guess.

Lookin' good, Andy! That's quite a stroke of luck there with the mounting height. What's your explanation then for all the other pics we've seen where they're mounted with exhaust manifolds between the frame rails? Just curious.

With that motor sitting so high, don't forget about maximum driveline angles between trans/driveshaft and driveshaft/rear axle. If the angles are too great, you will see your revs oscillate a few hundred rpm as you drive down the road. An off-road guy can tell you all about those kinds of problems.

Cyco Path, mine is the 425. I wanted a 500, but for a hundred bucks, I snatched it up.

gmcblu, the mounting height before was mocking it up. I had no idea I would get this lucky. I thought the engine was a little more narrow than it actually is.

MikeB, Drive shaft angle won't be a problem. One thing to remember witht eh 2 piece shaft, you have a little more room for error being that there are 3 U-joints to take up the slack. Plus, the tranny is in the exact location it was in before. another stroke of luck....I wonder how long the lucky streak will last?

Stepside, lol... I haven't really done a WHOLE lot...but is sure seems like I have.

Hooter, I kinda like the blue, and plus, you'll never find a normal caddy color on the parts store shelf.
Besides, that is damn near the original engine color.

Thanks for the praise guys!

Hey, that looks pretty good. If I can find a 4x4 around here that is old enough to be smog exempt I will probably be looking for a caddy engine too. I saw a whole car for sale for $50.00 the other day. Let me know if I could still come and look at it when I am in Columbus next month. I will probably be there the 10th-12th.

I am so grateful for your website. I'm swapping a 500 into my '68 C10 and this is quite possibly the best thing I could have stumbled across.

Couple of quick questions:

1) Am I right in assuming a Chevy bellhousing will not bolt onto the Cad block? I was hoping to run the Super T-10, weighted clutch and a reinforced bellhousing currently in my truck.

2) If I have to run the TH400 that came with the Cad, I'd like to get an idea of overall length. It looks/sounds like you didn't have to modify your driveline any, but I'd like to be able to measure for peace of mind.

Thanks!

Earl Junior

Andy , I was studying the pictures of your mounts and was wondering the following . I have a 67 longbed with 6 cly towers and want to put a chevy big block in the truck . Can these 6 cly towers be modified , may be with a steel pad welded on and then drilled to take a V8 mount or are the towers them selves to light in strength to use with a Big Block ? I have been following your project for a while , good job, good pictures.
