Alright drag race guys

Starting to get the itch, haven't seen many drag truck related threads come up for awhile. So let's hear what everyones up to, new changes, setups, videos, anything to do with drag racing or high performance trucks.

I have parts piling up waiting for spring to come.

Moser Fab 9" narrowed rear, aluminum center, spool, 35 spline, with Willwood discs
QA1 front drag shocks
QA1 rear adjustable shocks
Going to kick up the frame rails and go to 31x16.5/15 tire
Dual pistion aluminum front calipers
Likely a Willwood master
Tubular front control arms
Fiberglass cowl hood
A1000 fuel pump with A2000 return reg.
Pro Systems custom nitrous carb
200hp nitrous jets

Re: Alright drag race guys

man if you get all that done, you should be running in the 9's. i liked seeing your truck on this thread runing without glass and how quick it was for the weight. but if you want to go faster weight is definately somthing to shed.

i have been sick since christmass and have not gotton out to work on mine. started welding up rear suspension with the qa1 coil overs this fall. i am also running qa1's all the way around. mustang II up front. man i wish i would have went your rout and just added as i went along its a lot funner. i am so slow at getting things done cause of lack of interest and i am lazy. lol

anyways looking foward to seeing more posts and times from all you drag racers....

Re: Alright drag race guys

What info can you give me on the Qa-1 shocks What I guess I want to know is are they available for a truck with a dropped suspension? my drag truck is planned for a 31/2 5 drop and I'd like the QA1's for it. Who do you get yours from? JOHN

My engine dynoed about 640hp with a smaller carb then I run now. The 10.77 is with a 150 shot, but I've ran a bit faster with the same. It's mini tubbed, 4-linked, roll bar etc. Weighs 4128 plus driver. I wanna run in the low 10's, my truck NHRA techs for as low as 10.00. Wouldn't mind running at least one 9sec pass at a outlaw track this year just to get the time slip.

Front shocks are QA1 #RC1574P and expensive like $180 each. Got mine up here from a place in Canada but Summit and Jeg's has them. they are 10.13" compressed and 14" extended. Will be close with just drop coils, if they are too long I'll go to longer coils and drop spindles as they will work that way for sure. (my A-arms are stock height)

My rears are coilovers as my truck is 4-linked. But for you they have QA1 #TC1574P you could use on the back if the demensions work for you and your keeping the stock coils. Mesurements are the same as fronts.

Tell you one thing for sure, costs alot more changing things along the way, but if I wasn't driving it inbetween wrenching sessions I'd likely be too lazy to work on it also Hope you get yours on the track soon!

Re: Alright drag race guys

Thanks 71Dragtruck I guess I could have taken the shocks that ECE sent with the drop and measured them and compared to what QA-1 offered. so far I have reinforced my frame by welding in all my crossmembers and my trail arms. used poly bushings and mounts everywhere, and moved my motor and trans as far back as clearance allowed. Still planning on a diet for the truck, wish I could find fiberglass front bumper. Motor is 383 11-1 compression Dart pro 1's ported and upgraded springs, Edelbrock RPM dual plane airgap ported, Eagle forged crank and rods lightened, solid roller cam and lifters yet to be purchased I gaped the total seal rings on the JE pistons for up to a 250 shot If it all sounds like mumble Jumble its because I still haven't worked everything out. But I'm getting there and hoping to not make to many expensive mistakes. JOHN

Re: Alright drag race guys

hey john@thepier

if you run the shocks in the rear in stock placement. try and move either the bottom or the top of the shock to make them stand straight up. you will get better response from the shock that way on launch. gm puts them at an angle for cornering and such.

No problem, no mumble jumbo there, sounds like you have a plan. I also wish you could get glass bumpers and seperate front fenders. I know you can get a front clip whole cab, doors and box, but not what I want. I'm running aluminum where I can, no heater or stereo but it still weighs a tonne. Everytime I do something to go faster I have to add more weight in safety equip. Oh well love to see the look people give me when they ask what it weighs, lighter would be nice just not willing to hack up sheet metal or give up my chrome at this time. Looking good is just as much of the hobby to me as going fast.

Calipers are Howe Racing #33701, got them from a performance place here in Canada, look for a place that sells circle track stuff, they go for around $180 to $190 each, weigh 5lbs. each and hold stock pads. Bought the control arms from a board member on here.

Re: Alright drag race guys

I wanna take one of my trucks out on TT night (test n tune) --- its a '75 (but i hang out in the 67-72 forums because those are my favorites - my 69 is just in a million pieces though)

It has a stock 454 with stock 781 oval port heads --- probably has 300 hp. I waded through the Summit catalog and ordered an adjustable cheater system that i plan on running 175 jets in. I will not run it until i get a set of the cal-trac traction bars though --- it still has a peg leg rear end and i dont want to overspeed the right rear and fishtail into the guardrail at mid-track or anything

I am realistic with my expectations though, i am hoping to see timeslips in the 14's with it, high 13's would be very entertaining in a stock looking truck

Any faster than that and the heads would either have to be monked on, or thrown in the river and replaced with an alloy set, probably could use a cam with more exhaust scavenging ability to better take advantage of the nitrous too, but it wont get that, because i am too lazy to change cams with the motor in the truck

Re: Alright drag race guys

I just ordered Doug's Tri-Y headers, and the Magnaflow header-back kit.

I'm replacing hooker competition headers and hooker aero-chambers. Hoping to quiet the thing down some, and maybe gain a bit w/the tri-y's.

Re: Alright drag race guys

the trailing arm stock suspension works well but I doubt the leaf spring would work very well.

No I never did at the track but did on the highway with my 396, never had wheel hop. lot's of guys run stock trailing arms with coilovers and have no problem hooking up.

i think the dude was referring to leaf spring vehicles -- as all the old camaros are leaf springers
